Adam Cernek named MAC Swimmer of the Week

CLEVELAND – Southern Illinois freshman Adam Cernek earned Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week, the league announced Wednesday afternoon. It is the second time this season he has received the weekly honor.

Cernek won three individual events and swam on four winning relay teams to help the Salukis to a team title at the SIU Invitational last weekend. The Turany, Slovakia native highlighted Day Three of the invite with a career performance in the 200-yard backstroke, as he raced to a school record and NCAA "B"cut mark of 1:45.02. The time beat former Saluki Marcelo Possato's record mark of 1:45.16 set during the 2004-05 season. Cernek's other two victories came in the 100-yard backstroke (48.81) and 200-yard individual medley (1:48.68).

On the season, Cernek has tallied a team-best 11 event wins and ranks top-30 nationally in the 200-back (10^th), 200-IM (20^th) and 100-back (28^th). All three events are MAC-best times.
