The Salukis will go for their fourth-straight win when they take on their border rival.
The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (5-2) will put its three game win streak on the line Saturday when it travels to Southeast Missouri to take on the Redhawks. Tip-off inside the Show Me Center is set for 6:30 p.m. The Salukis have won five-straight over the Redhawks heading into Saturday's showdown.
All-Time vs. SEMO
• The Salukis are 29-7 all-time against SEMO in a series that dates back to the 1961-62 season.
• SIU has won five-straight over the Redhawks, and six of its last seven against its border rival.
• Southern is 8-4 all-time against SEMO in Cape Girardeau and have won the last two meetings at the Show Me Center.
• Saturday's showdown will mark the eighth-straight season in which the regional rivals have played each other. The series took a six-year hiatus from 2006 to 2011.
• In 36 career meetings, the average margin of victory is 17.1 points. Two of the last three meetings have been decided by seven points or fewer.
Last time they met- SIU 60, SEMO 40 (11/14/18)
• Southern fell behind 15-3 after the game's first eight minutes but countered with a 22-5 run to build a 25-20 halftime lead that it never relinquished.
• The Salukis limited SEMO to just five second quarter points- which was tied for the fewest it has allowed in a second quarter since the NCAA went to four quarters prior to the 2015-16 season.Â
• The trio of Nicole Martin, Makenzie Silvey and Abby Brockmeyer did most of the heavy lifting for Southern. They combined for 78% of SIU's points (47-of-60).Â
Current Salukis vs. the RedhawksÂ
• Nicole Martin is Southern's active leader in points (40) and minutes (81) vs. the Redhawks. She scored 19 points and added eight rebounds in last season's win and averages 13.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in three career meetings against SEMO.
• Abby Brockmeyer and Makenzie Silvey have both reached double figures both times that they have faced the Redhawks.
• Brockmeyer comes into Saturday's contest averaging 13 points and 10 rebounds against the Redhawks while Silvey is averaging 14.5 points and 3.5 boards in two career meetings.
SIU vs. the Ohio Valley Conference
• The Salukis are 3-0 this season against Ohio Valley Conference opponents and have won six-straight over OVC programs.
• Southern will play at least five OVC schools this season (with a potential of a sixth, EIU, depending on the results of the Compass Challenge) and have the opportunity to match the 2014-15 Salukis, who went 5-0 against OVC opponents.
• In 194 lifetime meetings against OVC schools, the Salukis sport a .731 winning percentage (142-52).
Stein vs. the OVC
• Cindy Stein is 30-12 all-time against OVC schools during her 21 seasons as a head coach.
• Stein sports a .500 or better career record against six OVC schools and a 7-2 record versus SEMO.
Off to a good start
• With SIU's win over UT Martin, the Salukis improved to 5-2 on the season, which matched the best start through seven games during Cindy Stein's seven seasons as head coach.Â
• It is the best start for the Salukis since the 2014-15 season, when SIU also went 5-2 and finished with a 7-4 non-conference record.
• A 6-2 start would equal the best start since the 2014-15 season, while a 7-2 start would be the best by the Salukis since the 1986-87 season when Southern started 18-2.
December to remember
• SIU went 4-0 last season in the month of December- which marked just the third perfect December in school history and first since 1987.
• Southern has now won seven-straight December games dating back to the 2017-18 season.
• It is tied for the second-longest streak of December wins in program history- SIU also won seven-straight December games during the 1982-83 and 1983-84 seasons.
• The school record for consecutive wins in the month of December is 12, set over three seasons (1985-87).
• The Salukis are 22-14 (.611) all-time in the month of December under seventh-year head coach Cindy Stein.
Getting to the basket
• Through seven games, SIU leads the Valley, and ranks 19th nationally in field goal percentage (46.9%).
• The Salukis have made at least 40-percent of their attempts from the field in all seven games this season.
• SIU shot 55% from the field in its win at Eastern Michigan- which marked the third time already this season that Southern has shot 50% or better from the floor. SIU's three games shooting 50% or higher is as many as it had during the entire 2018-19 season.
• Southern is 14-6 under seventh-year head coach Cindy Stein when making at least half of its shot attempts.Â
• Since 1988, SIU holds an .811% (86-20) winning percentage when shooting 50% or better.
Upping its average
• The Salukis currently rank third in the Valley, and 40th in the nation, with a 77.0 points per game average.Â
• Southern scored 70 points in its win over UT Martin, which marked the fifth time in seven games that SIU has scored 70 or more points in a game. The Salukis scored 70-plus points in 10 games all of last season.
• Southern is doing so by ranking in the top-20 nationally in both field goal and three-point field goal percentage. SIU ranks 19th nationally in 3-point FG percentage at 38.1-percent.
Â
Points per 100 possessions
• Southern is averaging 107.8 points per 100 possessions- the best average in the Valley and 19th-best in the nation. SIU's 107.8 points per 100 possessions average is more than 12 points (12.8) better than last season. (95.0 points per 100 possessions).
• The Salukis are doing so thanks to a .91 points per play average- the best average in the MVC and 24th-best in the nation.Â
Leading the league
• Makenzie Silvey is averaging 20.3 points per game- which leads the Valley and ranks 17th nationally.
• She has reached double figures in 17-straight games dating back to last season.
• The 2019 All-MVC honorable mention selection has four 20-point games this season- she had totaled five 20 points games during her first two seasons.
• Silvey is just the third Saluki in program history, and first since Amy Rakers during the 1990-91 season, to record four 20-point games in the first seven games of a season.Â
Salukis to record four or more 20-point games through the first seven games of a season:
Makenzie Silvey - 2019-20 season
Amy Rakers - 1990-91 season
Petra Jackson - 1984-85 season
• The Glen Carbon, Ill. native went for 20 point/5 rebound/4 assist/2 blocks/2 steals in the win over UT Martin - which was the first 20/5/4/2/2 stat line since Dyana Pierre at Murray State on Dec. 2, 2015.
• She needs just three points to reach 900 for her career and will become the 29th player in program history to reach the milestone.

• Nicole Martin scored 10 points and added nine boards in SIU's win over UT Martin.
• Martin's 1,140 career points are the 19th-most in school history. She is 60 points shy of cracking the Top-15 in program history.
