
Salukis continue road swing at Valparaiso on Sunday

Southern is going for its second-straight season sweep of the Crusaders.
The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team hits the road to take on the Valparaiso Crusaders in Valparaiso, Ind. on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m., inside ARC Arena. Fans can tune into MAGIC 95.1 FM starting at 12:40 p.m. for game coverage, while the game can also be viewed on ESPN3.
All-Times Series History vs. Valpo
• The Salukis and the Crusaders will meet for the fourth time Sunday.
• SIU leads the all-time series, 3-0.
• Southern won the first meeting, a 74-63 win inside the SIU Arena behind a then career-high 19 points from Makenzie Silvey.
• The Salukis outlasted the Crusaders to win at Valparaiso in double overtime, 88-86 on Feb. 16 to complete the season sweep.
• SIU had five score in double figures for the first time this season in its 87-65 win over Valparaiso on Jan. 25.
Current Salukis vs. the Crusaders
• Makenzie Silvey has reached double figures in three-straight against Valparaiso, including a team-high 21 points in SIU's 87-65 win earlier this season. Silvey comes into Sunday's tilt averaging 18.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.3 steals in three career meetings versus the Crusaders.
• Silvey's 18.0 points per game average against Valparaiso are her highest scoring average against any one MVC team.
• Nicole Martin averaged 15.3 points and 6.0 rebounds against the Crusaders in three career meetings. Martin finished with 16 points and five rebounds in SIU's home win over Valpo on Jan. 25.
• Abby Brockmeyer chipped in 11.3 points and 5.6 rebounds in her three career meetings against Valparaiso.
Scouting the Crusaders
• The Crusaders have lost eight of their last nine games and are 6-20 overall and 2-12 in the Valley.
• Meredith Hamlet leads the team with a 12.5 points per game average while Addison Stoller is second in scoring (11.7) and leads the Crusaders in rebounds per game (6.5).
• The Crusaders have placed an added emphasis on three-point shooting this season. Valpo leads the league in three-pointers made (217) and attempted (645) and 40.8% of their shots come from behind the arc - the 9th-highest rate in the nation.
• Valparaiso's achilles heel this season has been rebounding- they currently rank 347th out 349 NCAA DI teams in rebounds per game (30.24).
Martin leads the way
• Nicole Martin recorded her sixth double-double of the season, and eighth of her career, in the win at Loyola.
• She set new career-highs with 16 rebounds and 12 defensive boards.
• Martin scored in double figures in her fourth-straight game to inch closer to becoming the seventh-active Missouri Valley Conference player to join the 1,000 career points club.
• Martin sits at 949 career points and would become the 26th Saluki to reach 1,000 career points and just the ninth to do so during their junior season.
Dialed in from deep
• The Salukis drained 10 threes in the win over Loyola- its most in a game in over two months. Southern last sank 10-plus threes in the 82-73 win over Northern Illinois on Dec. 8, 2018.
• It marked the third time this season that SIU has made 10 or more threes in a game and the first time they have done so in Missouri Valley Conference play.
Linking up
• Caitlin Link tied her career-highs in points (8), steals (1), field goals made (3), free throws made (2) and free throws attempted (2) in the win over Loyola.
• It marked the fourth career start for the Madison, Wis. product, who has started three-straight games since returning from injury.
Getting up there
• Brittney Patrick finished with three points, eight assists, seven boards and two blocks and a steal in the win over Loyola Friday night.
• It marked the fifth time in her last seven games that the junior point guard has snagged 7 or more rebounds and she tied career-bests in offensive rebounds (3) and blocks (2) in the win.
• Patrick has dished out five-plus assists in exactly one-half (12-of-24) of SIU's games this season.
Shooters gonna shoot
• Makenzie Silvey scored 12 second-half points to reach double figures for the fourth-straight game.
• It marked the 21st time this season, and 37th time in her career, that she has reached double figures.
• Her two three-pointers in the win moved her into a tie with Jordyn Courier (2011-14) for seventh on SIU's all-time list. She needs just 31 points to reach 700 for her career.
• Silvey's 57 three-pointers this season are the fourth-most in a season by a sophomore in program history. The Glen Carbon, Ill. native needs four threes to move past Rishonda Napier and Kylie Giebelhausen for second. Teri Oliver holds the school record for threes by a sophomore with 71, set during the 2011 season.
• Silvey is approaching the top-10 in several additional categories for sophomore seasons- she's 13 points from cracking the top-10 in points by a sophomore and needs a steal to move into the top-10 for most takeaways by a second-year.
• She currently ranks fourth in the league in three-pointer made per game (2.33/game).
Active Streaks
• Makenzie Silvey tied for the team-lead with three steals at Loyola to extend her streak of games with at least one steal to 14.
Two of a kind
• Celina VanHyfte was one of seven Salukis to make a three-pointer in the win over Loyola.
• It was her second three of the season and both have come against Loyola.
Lock Down Defense
• Southern allowed the fewest points it has allowed in consecutive quarters (10) since the quarter system was instituted prior to the 2015-16 season.
• Loyola's five third quarter points were the fewest SIU has allowed in a third quarter in program history.
• The five points that SIU allowed in the second and third quarters in the win over the Ramblers are tied for the third-fewest SIU has allowed in any quarter since the 2015-16 season.
• Southern has allowed 5-points or fewer in nine quarters since 2015-16, of which six have come this season.
Double-Doubles
• Nicole Martin recorded her sixth double-double of the season at Loyola, which is second on the team to Abby Brockmeyer's 7 double-doubles.
• It marks just the third time in program history (dating back to 1979) that two or more Salukis have had 6-plus double-doubles in the same season and the first time in four years.
• Sue Faber (11), Char Warring (8) and Connie Price (8) accomplished the feat first during the 1981-82 season and Dyana Pierre (16) and Azia Washington (6) most recently did so during the 2014-15 season.
Jumping Passing Lanes
• Southern has notched 10-plus steals in 10 games this season, most recently in its 64-41 win over Loyola.
• The Salukis recorded 10-plus steals in 10 games during the 2018 season, which were the most in a season during head coach Cindy Stein's six seasons at the helm of the Salukis.
• Earlier this season, SIU's five-game streak of 10-plus steals was its longest since the 1994-95 team posted six-straight games with 10 or more takeaways. The 1994-95 Salukis set a school record for most games, 20, with at least 10 steals.
