Southern's three selections are tied for the most in the Missouri Valley Conference.
ST. LOUIS - Three members of the Southern Illinois women's basketball team were recognized as Missouri Valley Conference Scholar Athletes, the conference announced Tuesday. Sophomores Abby Brockmeyer and Makenzie Silvey were named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete Second Team, while junior Nicole Martin earned Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention honors.
Southern's three total honorees are tied with Northern Iowa and Drake for the most of any Valley school. The criteria for the scholar-athlete team balloting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves, have played at least 75-percent of a team's games, and must carry at least a 3.20 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
Silvey earned her first career Scholar-Athlete second team honor after posting a cumulative 3.98 GPA while majoring in business. The shooting guard from Edwardsville, Ill. has started all 29 games for SIU and is averaging 14.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 steals in 33.0 minutes per game. She has scored in double figures in 26 games this season, including five games with 20-plus points. Silvey finished the regular season ranked in the top-15 of the Missouri Valley Conference in six statistical categories, including third in three-pointers per game (2.3), fourth in minutes played per game (33.0), seventh in steals per game (1.7), eighth in scoring (14.3), eighth in field goal percentage (.378) and 15th in assists per game (2.4). Earlier this season, Silvey cracked the top-10 in program history in career three-pointers, as her 118 career treys are the seventh-most in school history.
Brockmeyer earned her first nod to the Scholar-Athlete second team after posting a 3.94 GPA as a business major. The 2018 MVC Freshman of the Year, Brockmeyer has appeared in all 29 games for SIU and has 24 starts this season. The Raymond, Ill. native is averaging 10.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 blocks per game. She has reached double figures in 12 games this season, including nine double-doubles. She finished the regular season ranked in the top-five of the Missouri Valley Conference in three categories, including third in both rebounds per game (8.1) and offensive rebounds (2.7) and fifth in blocked shots (1.2).
Martin earned her first career MVC Scholar-Athlete honor after she nabbed a spot on the honorable mention team. An exercise science major with a 3.29 GPA, Martin appeared in all 29 games this season for SIU with 28 starts. She is averaging 14.8 points and 7.5 rebounds in 27.8 minutes per games. She has scored in double figures in 21 games this season, including five with 20-plus points. She finished the 2019 regular season ranked in the top-10 of the MVC in four statistical categories, including third in field goal percentage (53.4%), third in offensive rebounds per game (2.4), fifth in rebounds per game (7.5) and sixth in points per game (14.8). Martin became just the 26th Saluki to reach 1,000-career points in the victory at Indiana State on March 7 and the eighth to reach the career milestone as a junior.
SIU is back in action on Friday, March 15 at 8:30 p.m. against the Northern Iowa Panthers. Tickets to "Hoops in the Heartland" are available at mvcquadcities.com.
