Martin finished with a game-high 23 points to become the 26th Saluki to score 1,000-career points.
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Nicole Martin reached the 1,000-career point plateau in style, as she scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Southern Illinois women's basketball team to their third-straight road win, an 80-61 victory at Indiana State Thursday night.
With the win, the Salukis clinch the sixth seed in next weekend's Missouri Valley Conference tournament and will play the No. 3-seeded Northern Iowa Panthers on Friday, March 15 at 8:30 p.m.
"We knew this was going to be a tough game because we wanted it so bad," sixth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "We aren't excited about being the sixth seed, but at the same time, we definitely want to play on Friday. Everyone starts 0-0 when you get to the tournament. Our most important thing right now is to focus on Evansville."
Martin played an integral role in the Salukis win, as she was 9-of-15 from the field for a game-high 23 points. She finished a rebound shy of a double-double, as she added nine boards, two assists and a block in 32 minutes. The Jefferson City, Mo. native is the 26th Saluki to reach the 1,000-career point plateau and just the ninth Saluki to reach the milestone as a junior.
"It's surreal," said Martin of reaching the 1,000-point milestone. "It was a surprise. I just can't believe I got it. It was very unexpected."
Martin admittedly didn't know she was even approaching the milestone until Coach Stein told her earlier this week.
"I didn't know that I was close to a 1,000 career points until a couple of days ago," Martin said. "Honestly when Coach Stein told me I was close, I got kind of nervous. But when she did, it was cool because I know I didn't get to 1,000 career points in high school and I didn't realize how close I was."
Abby Brockmeyer added her seventh double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 boards to go along with three assists and two blocks. Makenzie Silvey reached double figures for the eighth-straight game, as she added 11 points and three assists. Brittney Patrick dished out eight assists and added three rebounds to go along with a pair of steals.
The Salukis shot a season-best 54.5% (30-of-55) from the field and scored exactly half (40) of their points in the paint. On the defensive end, Southern held Indiana State to 33.3% (18-of-54) shooting from the field, including just 23.5% (4-of-17) from three-point range. SIU also out-rebounded its opponent for the fifth-straight game, winning the boards by a healthy 43-to-26 margin.
The Sycamores opened with a 6-2 run before Southern answered with its own 6-2 spurt to tie the game at 8-all. Back-to-back three-pointers from Caitlin Link staked SIU to a 14-10 lead. The Salukis shot 53.3% (8-of-15) from the field in the first quarter, and took a seven-point advantage on an and-one by Martin with :05 to play in the quarter. Tierra Webb answered with a three at the buzzer to keep it a four-point game at 21-17.
SIU used a 9-2 run to build a 30-21 lead with 7:10 to play in the second quarter. Southern's offense stalled with Martin and Patrick on the bench and Indiana State took advantage via a 9-1 run that got the home team to within one, 31-30 with just under four minutes to play in the first half. Southern answered by virtue of Payton McCallister's first trey that grew its lead back to seven. Three Sycamore free throws in the final :15 seconds of the second quarter kept it a four-point game at the half.
The Salukis made 7-of-9 attempts from the floor to open the third quarter and took a 13-point lead (59-46) on Kristen Nelson's second three-pointer of the game. Southern shot 60% from the floor for the quarter to outscore Indiana State, 22-to-14 and led 62-50 at the end of three.
The Salukis are back in action on Saturday, March 9 at Evansville for their regular season finale. Tip-off against the Purple Aces is set for 1 p.m.
