WEST LAFAYETTE, IN. – This week the Southern Illinois Men's Golf team is headed to Purdue University for the Boilermaker Invitational for the fifth year in a row. Last year the Salukis placed 11th out of 17 teams. This will be the last regular season tournament before the MVC Championship on April 22-23, 2019.
"We've been fortunate to have been going to Purdue for several years now. The field is always really good and the golf course is great," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. "It's always a good practice for us right before the conference championship since at Purdue we'll face some of the best teams in the country."
The Salukis playing this weekend will be Luke Gannon, Peyton Wilhoit, Hunter York, Matthis Besard, and Frankie Thomas. The 15-team field this weekend includes host Purdue, Ball State, Cincinnati, Illinois State, Indiana, Kent State, Miami Ohio, Michigan, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Santa Clara, Southern Illinois, and Wisconsin.
The Salukis last played on April 8-9, 2019 at the Tiger Invitational hosted by the University of Missouri where the team placed seventh. Senior Hunter York set a career record with a round of 65.
The Boilermaker Invitational will be held at the Kampen Course, designed by Pete Dye. The layout of the course presents a challenge for golfers of all abilities. Kampen Course is rated one of the top collegiate courses in the nation.
"It never hurts when you've got an experienced group. Not only in collegiate experience, but in experience at this course. Both Peyton and Luke have played it every year they've been here, same with Hunter and Frankie. I think we're going to rely on that experience this weekend," said Fetcho.
Round one will be Saturday, April 13th with tee times starting at 8:45 a.m. with a shotgun start. The teams will play a continuous 36 holes. The final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 14th. Live stats will be available on Golfstat.com.
