CARBONDALE, Ill. - No. 27 Dallas Baptist scored eight unanswered runs after an early 2-0 deificit to beat Southern Illinois 11-6 on Friday night at Itchy Jones Stadium. The Patriots evened the series and, with Illinois State's loss to Evansville, jumped into a first-place tie in the Missouri Valley Conference race heading into the regular season's final game.Â
SIU (24-26, 5-15 MVC) loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first inning. DBU (37-16, 13-7 MVC) took some of that momentum back with a double play, but Aiden McMahan came through with a two-out RBI single to give the Salukis an early 2-0 lead.Â
DBU got a run back in the second inning on a one-out homer, and the game turned during a four-run third inning that turned SIU's 2-1 lead into a 5-2 deficit. The Patriots took a 3-2 lead and had the bases loaded with two outs. A grounder that looked like it would get SIU out of the inning hit the first base bag and caromed away to score two more DBU runs. While Southern limited Dallas Baptist to four hits in Thursday night's series opening win, the Patriots had four hits in the third inning alone and 13 hits in the game.Â
"We got behind too many hitters, and they're a really good offensive club," SIU head coach Ken Henderson said. "We have to throw more strikes. You can't get behind good hitters, and that was the difference in the ballgame. We got down too many runs to a team with good pitching, and that's hard to come back from."
DBU added two runs in the fifth inning, and Bryce Ball hit his seventh homer in the last six games with a solo shot in the sixth inning to give DBU a commanding 8-2 lead.Â
SIU's Nikola Vasic stole two bases and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Ian Walters followed with a solo homer to left field. Southern's four runs against DBU starter MD Johnson were the most Johnson has allowed this year in any of his 14 starts.Â
The Salukis aded two ninth-inning runs on Philip Archer's opposite field two-run homer.Â
The final game in the series is Saturday at 2 p.m. in Itchy Jones Stadium. The program will honor its eight seniors prior to first pitch, with the Senior Day ceremony set to start at approximately 1:40 p.m.Â
