CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University Salukis kick off their inaugural season by hosting the program's first-ever regular season opponent in the University of Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars (0-0 overall) on Friday Aug. 23 at 6:30 p.m. followed by the University of North Alabama Lions (0-0) on Sunday, Aug 25 at 1 p.m.
1. NOW IT COUNTS: The Salukis were able to get three exhibition games under their belts, going 1-2 over that span with a victory over Tennessee Tech and close losses to UIC and SEMO. The exhibitions stand as a good way for the new Salukis to get some quality in-game experience with one another before the regular season starts.
The exhibitions also stand as a way for the coaches to evaluate their team, lineups and what may or may not work when the game counts.
"We have a lot of really good pieces," head coach Grant Williams said on Monday in reference to what he learned over the three games. "It's just going to take a little time for them to get experience. We're still moving enough people around that that cohesion and chemistry will develop over time."
2. SCOUTING UIS: Friday's match will go down in the record books as the first-ever regular season match in the history of Saluki soccer. Coming off of a 2018 campaign that saw the program go 3-11-3, the Prairie Stars return five players who played in 14 games or more, including leading scorer Maggie Juhlin, who led the squad with four goals and nine total points. In goal, the team returns Bailey Cross, who went 5-5 with eight goals allowed last season, in addition to Juhlin, who was 1-0 with a save in her lone action from the 2018 campaign. As a team, the Prairie Stars netted 11 goals on 153 total shots, with 60 of those shots coming on goal.
3. SCOUTING UNA: The Lions are coming off a successful 2018 campaign that saw the team go 11-9-1 and fall one game short of an ASUN conference crown to Lipscomb. The team returns nine players who started in 16 games or more last season, including leading scorers Shelby Wall with eight goals and Anna Bové with six. Savannah Stewart returns as the lone goalie with playing experience, as the senior went 3-2 with five goals allowed a season ago. The Lions will enter Sunday's match fresh off of their season-opener to Ole Miss, a 2018 NCAA tournament participant.
4. FAMILIAR FACE: Sophomore defender Kailyn Stone transferred into the Saluki program this year after spending last season at the University of North Alabama. As a freshman, Stone played in 10 games with one start. Stone saw a season-high 65 minutes of action against Kennesaw State on Oct. 26, 2018.
5. DEFENDING THE HOME TURF: Friday's match will be the first of five-straight home matches for the Salukis. After the two matches this weekend, the Salukis will welcome in Rose-Hulman on Aug. 27, Belmont on Aug. 30 and IUPUI on Sept. 1. Live stats for all home matches will be provided and can be found here.
Fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, as bleacher seating is limited. Tickets are available to see the Salukis in action during their inaugural season at SIUSalukis.com or by calling 1-877-SALUKIS.
