CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois women's soccer team (2-1 overall) is gearing up for the final two matches of their five-game homestand when the squad welcomes in the Belmont University Bruins (0-2) on Friday at 6 p.m. and IUPUI (1-1) on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m.
1. LAST TIME OUT: The Salukis picked up their second victory of the year with a 1-0 shutout of Rose-Hulman on Tuesday. Freshman forward Emma Spotak netted her second goal of the year in the 56th minute to push the Salukis to 2-1 on the year.
2. SCOUTING BELMONT: Friday's match is the third of the season for the Bruins, who are off to a 0-2 start. Junior Paige Hewitt is the lone goal scorer this season, as the forward netted her first goal of the year on Aug. 25 against Lipscomb. Junior forward Julie Garst leads the team in total shots taken with four, followed by senior forward/mid Niki Clements with three.
In goal, senior Lily Herman has started and played in every possible minute, recording 10 saves while giving up seven goals. Head coach Heather Henson is entering her ninth season with the program and is the winningest coach in team history with an overall record of 56-69-20.
3. SCOUTING IUPUI: The Jaguars are entering the weekend at 1-1 with an upcoming match against Western Illinois on Friday at 6 p.m. Valentine Pursey and Maya Lacognato are the two lone goal scorers on the season with one apiece. In goal, Sophia Lipka has played in all possible minutes for the Jaguars, recording 14 saves in that span. Head coach Chris Johnson is entering his 17th season with the program, leading the program in all-time wins with 114. In his career, Johnson has recorded an overall record of 195-229-40 between IUPUI and the University of Indianapolis.
4. SALUKI STATS: Freshman forward Emma Spotak leads the club in goals with two, in addition to leading in points with four. Junior forward Kathryn Creedon leads all teammates in shots with six, with an impressive five coming on goal. Madison Bennion, Kaitlin DuCharme, Paityn Schneider and Spotak all trail Creedon in total shots, with the quartet registering five each. Sam DeJulio leads the team in total minutes, having logged 201 out of 270 possible minutes. In goal, Dariana Mihalache leads the group of goalkeepers in saves with seven in 135 minutes of action.
As a team, the Salukis are outshooting their opponents 45-24, with 23 of those shots coming on goal. The Salukis also lead their opponents in corner kicks (22-9) and goals (4-3).
