CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois women's swimming and diving team defeated Indiana State 165-135 on Saturday afternoon inside Shea Natatorium for its second-straight conference win. The Salukis trailed by single digits at the midway point of the meet, but closed with four-straight first-place finishes to win handily. The Sycamores had won six of their last seven dual meets and beat SIU 204-96 in the most previous meeting (1/26/19).
SIU won eight individual events and both relays in its first home meet of 2020. Twelve Salukis recorded one or more top-three finishes.
"The women were really focused. We opened up one-two in the first relay and it set the tone for the meet," head coach Geoff Hanson said. "The Indiana State women came back and threw punches, but it was a fun dual-meet atmosphere. In all of our meets to this point, we've either been well ahead or it's gotten away from us early. It was cool to see how these women performed and reacted in a situation like that."

MEET HIGHLIGHTS
Sierra Forbord and Laura Carver led Southern with a combined four individual first-place finishes.
Forbord, a junior transfer from Colorado Mesa, placed first in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle with times of 52.61 and 1:53.51. It marked the second-consecutive meet she won the two events. The Olympia, Washington native was on both winning relay teams as well. Forbord, along with Lucia Romero, Sarah Vogt and Rita Naude took first in the 200-yard medley relay at 1:44.54. She swam the opening leg in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:33.14), which was followed by Abigail Young, Jacqueline Rose and Naude.
Carver swam to victory in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.12) and 200-yard individual medley (2:08.78). She also placed third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.60. The impressive performance raised her win total to 11 on the season.
Other first-place finishes came from Romero in the 100-yard backstroke (56.21) and Naude in the 100-yard butterfly (57.18). Both swimmers came close to a second victory, as Romero was runner-up by .64 seconds in the 100-free (53.25) and Naude was third in the 50-yard freestyle (24.77).
The quartet of Sarah Vogt (100-breast // 1:06.72), Samantha Parsons (200-breast // 2:23.99), Payton Parman (200-fly // 2:06.22) and Eden Girloanta (1000-free // 10:33.90) added runner-up finishes to help the Salukis to victory.
Twin sisters Baobao Ji and Beibei Ji went neck-and-neck in diving action, as the two were within one point of each other in both events. Baobao topped the podium in the one-meter dive with a score of 297.82, while Beibei claimed first in the three-meter dive at 297.75. Madeleine Cieszynski finished close behind in third place in the one-meter with a personal-best score of 257.92. Laura Mircea tabbed a season-best third-place finish in the three-meter (246.37).

"Older teams have some strengths and weaknesses. Coming down to the last couple of events, we knew that the 200-IM was going to be a strength for us. The icing on the cake was winning the last relay (400-free relay). It was not our top-four women for that relay. It was who we had available at the end of the meet. I'm really proud of them for stepping up."
"For the divers to go one-two-three and one-two-three-four on the boards was huge. It's swimming and diving. The points all count together and the divers are going to continue to be huge for us in conference. There are only two diving events compared to 19 swimming events, but those points add up greatly, especially when you can expect them to be on the podium."

Southern will be back in action for a pair of dual meets next weekend. The Salukis face Missouri on Friday, Jan. 31 and Evansville on Saturday, Feb. 1 for Senior Day.
