CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois swimming and diving program was named to the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America team for the Fall 2019 semester. It marked the 32nd-straight year the Salukis have made the list, which is awarded to teams achieving an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Geoff Hanson, the Saluki men combined for a 3.51 GPA, the sixth-best among NCAA Division I programs. SIU's women's team tied for 11th nationally with a 3.67 team GPA.
A combined 34 Salukis earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Twelve student-athletes obtained a 4.0 GPA in the semester.
"We strive for these type of honors," Hanson said. "The student part comes first for student-athletes and this team is really focused in on that. Swimming and diving is a close second in terms of priorities, but they are here first for academics. They are doing exactly what they set out as a team to do. We have academic goals every year and they are achieving those."
In total, a record 762 programs from 480 institutions were selected to the Scholar All-America Team for the Fall 2019 semester. The teams were selected on the basis of their Fall grade point averages and represent 17,685 student-athletes.
The CSCAA individual Scholar All-Americans will be announced next week.
