CARBONDALE, Ill. - Freshman newcomer, Fernanda Sánchez, sits down with SIUSalukis.com to discuss her Mexican culture and transition to SIU.
Why did you choose swimming?
I started swimming because my mom just wanted me to learn how. But, I realized that love going to swimming competitions. It's really cool to do this as a sport.
What significant traditions did you grow up with in Mexico?
The most important one in our country is Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos). We celebrate the people who are dead. We make honorable trinkets to them and decorate. We also eat bread and drink hot chocolate in their honor.
How was the transition for you into the United States?
It was really hard. I was pretty homesick. But, I feel better now. I do want to go back to Mexico for a couple of weeks to see my family.
How important is it for you to be so involved with your culture?
It means a lot to me. I'm so proud to be Mexican. When people ask me, I'm always proud to say that I'm from Mexico. People take Mexico for what it is or what they hear on the news. But, I'm very proud.
How important is Hispanic Heritage Month to you?
I'm very happy to be Mexican and I'm very comfortable and love to represent my country here.
