
Game Notes: Women's Basketball vs. Austin Peay/SEMO

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team hosts a pair of Ohio Valley Conference foes over the weekend, beginning with Austin Peay on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 3 p.m. The Salukis will follow with a 2 p.m. contest against the reigning OVC Tournament Champion SEMO Redhawks on Sunday, Dec. 13. The Redhawks were picked to finish second to Tuesday's opponent, UT Martin, in the annual OVC Preseason Coaches Poll. Both of SIU's contests can be heard locally on Magic 95.1 FM and can be streamed on ESPN+.

All-Time series vs. Austin Peay
- Austin Peay and SIU will meet for the seventh time, and first time since 2014, in a series that dates back to 2006.Â
- The all-time series is tied at 3-all.
- Southern won the most recent meeting- a 75-65 win in Clarksville, Tenn. on Dec. 13, 2014.
- The Governors were victorious the last time that the two met in Carbondale - a 71-69 win on Nov. 12, 2013.
Last Time they met - Dec. 13, 2014
- The Salukis led by as many as 16 and were down by as many as 7, but Southern fought back each time Austin Peay showed some promise to take the lead back.Â
- On the stat sheet, both teams were evenly matched with Southern shooting 46.7 percent compared to the Lady Gov percentage of 43.1.
- Four Salukis scored in double figures in the win- led by Dyana Pierre, who finished with 18 points and 15 boards while Azia Washington also posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
- The win gave Southern its first 5-2 start to a season since the 1991-92 season.
All-Time vs. SEMO
• The Salukis are 29-8 all-time against SEMO in a series that dates back to the 1961-62 season.
• The defending Ohio Valley Conference Tournament champion Redhawks snapped SIU's five-game win streak in the series with last season's victory. Southern has won six of the last eight matchups.
• Sunday's showdown will mark the ninth-straight season in which the regional rivals have played each other. The series took a six-year hiatus from 2006 to 2011.
• In 37 career meetings, the average margin of victory is 17 points. Southern defeated SEMO, 60-40, two years ago in the last game the two sides played at Banterra Center. The Redhawks had their revenge in last season's matchup with a 14-point, 79-65 win at the Show Me Center.
Last time they met - Dec. 7, 2019
- The Salukis led by as many as seven early but struggled offensively late in SEMO's 79-65 win. The Redhawks outscored the Salukis, 18-to-5, over the final five minutes of the contest and won the battle of the boards, 51-to-29.
- The Redhawks shot nearly as many free throws in the game's final ten minutes (20) as the Salukis shot all game (21). SEMO finished 30-of-38 from the charity stripe, which included 16-of-20 in the fourth.
- Gabby Walker had a career night for the Salukis. The junior forward finished 7-for-11 from the field for 15 points- the most she has scored as a Saluki. It was one of six times that the senior transfer scored in double figures in her first season at SIU.
- Walker was joined in double figures by Abby Brockmeyer, Makenzie Silvey and Kristen Nelson. Brockmeyer tallied 13 points and four boards, Silvey chipped in 10 points and six rebounds while Nelson added 11 points, four assists and two steals.
Current Salukis vs. the RedhawksÂ
• Abby Brockmeyer and Makenzie Silvey have both reached double figures in each of the three times that they have faced the Redhawks.
• Brockmeyer comes into Saturday's contest averaging 13 points and eight rebounds in her career against the Redhawks while Silvey is averaging 13 points and 4.3 boards in three career meetings.
SIU vs. the Ohio Valley Conference
• The Salukis went 4-1 last season against Ohio Valley Conference opponents and have won seven of their last eight meetings against OVC programs.
• Southern is scheduled to play at least three OVC schools this season.
• In 196 lifetime meetings against OVC schools, the Salukis sport a .728 winning percentage (143-53).
Stein vs. the OVC
• Cindy Stein is 31-13 all-time against OVC schools during her 21 seasons as a head coach.
• Stein sports a .500 or better career record against six OVC schools and is 2-2 in her career against Austin Peay.
Bench Points
- The Saluki bench scored 27 of SIU's 52 points in its season opener against Eastern Michigan on Nov. 25. Southern's 27 bench points were its most since Nov. 12, 2019, when SIU's bench scored 31 points at IUPUI. Â
December is our favorite month
- SIU went 4-1 last season in the month of December and are 8-1 in the month of December over the last two seasons. During the 2019 season, Southern went a perfect 4-0 in December- which marked just the third perfect December in school history and first since 1987.
- Southern has won 10 of its last 11 games in the month of December dating back to 2017-18 season.
- The Salukis are 25-15 (.605) all-time in the month of December under eighth-year head coach Cindy Stein.
Off to a Good Start
- Rachel Pudlowski had an opening night to remember, as she went 4-for-5 from the field for 10 points to go along with three boards and two assists in a career-high 25 minutes of work.
- It marked just the sixth career start for the O'Fallon, Mo. native and it was the second time in her career that she has scored in double figures. She scored a career-high 12 points in SIU's win at Marshall on Dec. 2, 2017.
Making their debuts
- Three of SIU's five newcomers- Quierra Love, Adrianna Katcher and Jeniah Thompson - made their debut in SIU's season opener.
- Love led the way with six points and two boards while Katcher tallied two points and tied for the team-lead with eight rebounds. Thompson played two minutes but did not score.
- Sydney Prochaska will medically redshirt this season while Janell Douvier is slated to return to action soon after recovering from an injury.
Climbing the List
• Makenzie Silvey ranks 17th in school history with 1,195 career points. She is five points shy of moving up to 16th all-time and 24 points shy of cracking the top-15.
• Last season, Nicole Martin became the fifth Saluki during the Stein era to crack the Top-10 in scoring in program history. Martin joined Cartaesha Macklin (1st; 1,779), Rishonda Napier (2nd; 1,728), Dyana Pierre (7th; 1,425) and Kylie Giebelhausen (10th; 1,298) in that club.

Joining the Club/Starting a New One
• Abby Brockmeyer ranks 30th in school history with 927 career points. She is 73 points shy of becoming the 28th member of SIU's 1,000 point club.
• Brockmeyer is on the verge of several career milestones. She is 16 rebounds shy of becoming the 11th player in program history with 700-plus career rebounds. The Raymond, Ill. native could also become the first player in program history to amass 1,000 career points/600 rebounds/100 steals/100 blocks and 100 assists. In addition to needing 73 points, she is 10 steals and two blocks shy of reaching the necessary milestones.
Double-Doubles
- Abby Brockmeyer narrowly missed her 20th career double-double against Eastern Michigan- she finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
- The Salukis are 12-7 all-time when Brockmeyer records a double-double.
