
Game Notes: Women's Basketball at Illinois

The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team will take on its second-straight Power 5 conference opponent in as many days, as the Salukis travel to Champaign, Ill. to take on the Fighting Illini on Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. The Salukis had their three-game win streak snapped at Missouri on Sunday, while the Illini last played 12 days ago in a loss to Nebraska in their Big Ten opener. SIU will be the third MVC school that Illinois has taken on this season- the Fighting Illini defeated Indiana State, 68-49 on Nov. 25 but fell to Valparaiso, 62-59 on Dec. 2. Tuesday's game can be heard locally on Magic 95.1 FM or can be streamed via the Big Ten Network Plus.
All-time vs. Illinois
• The Salukis and the Illini will meet for the 37th time on Tuesday in a series that dates back to 1962.
• SIU leads the all-time series, 21-15.
• Southern won seven of the first eight meetings, and 11 of the first 13 meetings between the two programs.
• U of I has won the last seven meetings between the programs, which includes the most recent meeting - a 78-64 win over the Salukis in Champaign on Dec. 8, 2015.
• SIU's last win in the series came on Dec. 11, 1993- a 69-65 win at Banterra Center.
• Southern's last win in Champaign came a season prior with a 74-70 victory on Dec. 13, 1992.

• SIU is 36-52 all-time against current Big 10 programs.
• Southern has faced 11 of the 14 teams currently in the Big 10.
• The Salukis last took on a current Big 10 opponent in 2016, when Southern defeated the Purdue Boilermakers, 64-61 on Nov. 20 in West Lafayette, Ind.Â
• SIU's win over Purdue in 2016 was its first over a Big 10 program since 1993.

Another familiar place
• Cindy Stein returns to her alma-mater Tuesday.
• Stein transferred to the University of Illinois in 1981 after two seasons at Illinois Community College.Â
• The Illini went 35-24 during her two seasons and advanced to the second round of the inaugural women's basketball NCAA Tournament in 1982. • Stein dished out 323 assists during her two seasons, which still ranks eighth in Illini history while her 170 helpers during the 1982-83 season are still the second-most in a single-season in program history.Â
• Her 13 assists against her hometown team, Bradley, on Dec. 22, 1982, meanwhile, remain tied for the fourth-most in a single game in school history.
• On Sunday, Stein returned to Mizzou after she spent 12 seasons (1998-2010) at the helm of the Tigers.
• Stein is 19-24 in her career against current BIg 10 programs but is winless in eight previous meetings against the Illini.
Snagging Boards
• Adrianna Katcher has grabbed at least five boards in each of her first five collegiate games.
• The freshman from Urbana, Iowa is averaging 7.2 rebounds per game- the most for any MVC freshman and ranks her 21st nationally amongst freshman.
Taking care of the ball
• The Salukis turned the ball over a season-low six times in the win over Kansas City on Dec. 17.Â
• It was the fewest turnovers for Southern since its 66-41 win over Evansville on March 3, 2018 in which SIU turned the ball over just four times.\
• Southern has committed the second fewest turnovers per game (12.8) in the Valley.
• SIU's win over Kansas City marked the 19th time during Coach Stein's tenure that the Salukis have finished with single-digit turnovers. Southern holds an 13-6 (.684) record in those games with four of the six losses coming by four points or fewer.
• Since 1985, SIU holds a .688 winning percentage (31-14) in games where it turns the ball over nine times or fewer.
Wins over NCAA Tourney Teams
• Southern won back-to-back games over teams that would've played in the 2020 NCAA Tournament in SEMO and Kansas City.
• SIU's 3-1 start to the season was its first since the 2017-18 season.
