Kluge became the 12th player in program history to reach the milestone.
Redshirt junior Katy Kluge recorded her 1,000th career dig but the Southern Illinois Volleyball team fell in four sets to Indiana State (19-25, 17-25, 25-21, 13-25) Monday night in Missouri Valley Conference action.
Kluge became just the 12th player in program history to reach the 1,000 career dig club in the loss. The Oconomowoc, Wis. native tallied 15 digs against the Sycamores to become the first Saluki since 2017 to reach the milestone.
Nataly Garcia paced SIU's attack with her seventh kill-dig double-double of the season. The Coamo, Puerto Rico native finished with 16 kills and 11 digs. Nsia Gittens tallied 12 kills on 37 swings, which marked the 12th time this season that the Nashville, Tenn. native has put down double-digit kills. Nine of Gittens' 12 kills came in SIU's third set win.Â
Defensively, the Salukis tied their season-high for digs in a four-set match with 79. Five different Salukis reached double figures in digs Monday, led by MacKenzie Houser's season-high 17 digs. Ryan Rednour set a new career-best with 17 digs of her own while Anna Jaworski notched her eighth career assist-dig double-double with 38 assists and 12 digs. Kluge (15) and Garcia (11) also reached double figures.Â
The Salukis scored three of the first four points of the first set and later broke a 6-all tie with four-straight points, highlighted by a solo block by Gittens. The Sycamores chipped away, eventually tying the frame at 15-all. Indiana State scored back-to-back points that forced SIU to use a timeout. The Salukis answered with back-to-back points of their own to tie the set at 17-all but the Sycamores scored eight of the final 10 points to seal the win.Â
The Sycamores open the second set on a 5-1 run and led by eight, 15-7 at the midway point. Southern got to within four on three occasions but that was as close as they could get.
The Salukis rebounded in the third frame as they outhit the Sycamores, .226-to-.176, in a 25-21 win. The Salukis fell behind 20-17 before a timeout brought Southern back to life. The Salukis outscored the Sycamores, 8-1, after the timeout to force a fourth set. Indiana State, however, squelched any chances of a Saluki comeback in the fourth set, as it led from start to finish to seal the four-set victory.Â
Southern is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 16 when it hosts the Missouri State Bears. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
