Salukis Close Out Regular Season at Bradley

Peoria, Ill. – The Southern Illinois cross country teams wrapped up their regular season on Friday at the Bradley Pink Classic on the campus of Bradley University. The women's team finished 12th in the team standings with 370 points. The women's Red Race had a field of 37 total teams competing. The men's team finished 17th with 476 points in a field of 31 teams.
Kayla Schiera once again led the pack for the Salukis. Schiera was the top finisher for SIU in the women's Red Race with a 34th place time of 21:41.0. Stephanie Anthonies (61st/22:11.6), Josie Brown (82nd/22:23.0), and Rachel Anderson (93rd/22:29.2) rounded out the rest of the top-100 for the Salukis.
"I thought we did a great job of working as a pack and running together," said head coach Kevin Cataldo of the women's team. "Stephanie had a great day and managed herself very well the entire race. Adding Josie Brown back to the lineup after not racing for a month due to injury was big for the team and she worked very well with Claire Ayers and Rachel Anderson in the middle portion of the race. All in all I'm really pleased with how we did and we will make a few tweaks heading into the conference meet."
In the men's Red Race, Ethan Senti was the top Saluki for the third straight meet with his 17th place finish of 24:29.2. Dawson Smith finished less than 10 seconds behind Senti to secure a 22nd place finish for the men's side, with a time of 24:39.0.
"Every guy 1-6 stepped up and had a PR today. I think we knew that we had to since Noah had to sit this race out after rolling his ankle in the warm up. We would rather be safe than sorry and get him healthy for the MVC's in late October. That being said, Ethan and Dawson both finished in the top 25 of a loaded field. Uriah had himself a big race and a step in the right direction he's capable of, and I couldn't be more proud of him for that. Adding Travis Hart back to the lineup after not racing for a month due to injury was huge for us as well. He and Vince did a great job of working together to round out the top 5."
The Salukis will try to carry the momentum into the MVC Championships come late October. The conference meet will be held in Normal, Illinois on the campus of Illinois State University. The Salukis previously ran at the championship course earlier this season when they competed in the Redbird Invite.
"Overall I'm happy seeing where the women are since this is the first time we raced our top group all at once. We just need to keep doing what we're doing and we will get to where we want to be. We have yet to race a full men's squad but I'm confident that when we do this young group will turn some heads," said Cataldo.
