Salukis Fall to Roos, 67-46

KANSAS CITY - A double-double by senior Abby Brockmeyer was not enough for the Southern Illinois women's basketball team Sunday afternoon, as the University of Missouri-Kansas City Roos took a 67-46 win in the Swinney Center. The Salukis started off cold, missing their first six attempts before sinking one. This early deficit proved too much, as Southern never held a lead in the game.
"We had some really good looks," said head coach Cindy Stein. "We did not finish them, and they're usually shots we finish. And instead of bouncing back and staying disciplined, our kids got down and they started pressing. That's what happens; we haven't been in this position before. It's a huge learning curve; we just got to get better from it."
After trailing 11-9 at the end of the first quarter, Southern was outscored 22-6 in the second quarter. The Salukis shot 5-for-30 in the first half, before rebounding to outscore Kansas City 16-14 in the third quarter. A big part of the improved second half play was the consistency of Brockmeyer, who grabbed 13 rebounds to go with 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting.
"Brockmeyer played a phenomenal game," said Stein. "Abby fights and I think Abby played the most controlled of everybody, and did a great job. We just didn't get anybody else going."
Southern's next leading scorer behind Brockmeyer was Payton McCallister with 9 points on 2-of-11 shooting. One promising trend for the Salukis is efficiency at the free-throw line. McCallister sunk all four of her free throws, and the team was 13-of-15 from the charity stripe for the game. This comes after the Salukis' season opener at Tennessee, where Southern did not miss a free throw attempt.
This was the second-straight game that saw the Salukis have multiple players with multiple steals. Freshman Laniah Randle nabbed two steals in her first regular-season action this season, while Brockmeyer and Makenzie Silvey each had two as well. Southern forced Kansas City into 18 turnovers, including nine total steals. All four Saluki freshman took the court for the first time this season. Paige Clubb notched the first two points of her career, while Tyranny Brown swatted her first career block.
The Salukis will have their home opener in 10 days' time, as IUPUI comes to Carbondale at 12 p.m. on November 24. Tickets start at just $5 and are available at siusalukis.com/tickets.
