MARTIN, Tenn. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team picked up a victory against UT Martin on Wednesday night, defeating the Skyhawks 69-54. This is the fourth win for the Salukis in their last five games.
Southern was paced in scoring by Makenzie Silvey with 23 points scored. Silvey finished 7-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, becoming the first Saluki with five treys since Payton McCallister on Dec. 13, 2020 against Southeast Missouri State. Also scoring in double figures were Abby Brockmeyer with 13, as well as Gabby Walker and Laniah Randle with 10 points each. Randle's 10 points are a new career high.
"I was really proud of our ball movement," said head coach Cindy Stein. "I feel like when the ball is in Makenzie's and Abby's hands, good things happen."
Southern shot 52.2% from the field for the game as well as 46.2% from three, both the second-highest marks this season.
The Salukis won the rebound battle 31-23, marking the fifth-straight game Southern has outrebounded their opponent. The Skyhawks were held to just eight rebounds in the second half. Walker led Southern with six rebounds, followed by Randle with five.
"Laniah made some plays that really helped us," said Stein. "There were chances for [UT Martin] to make a run, and she put it to rest."
The Salukis continue their two-game road swing Friday night at Middle Tennessee State. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
