MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Makenzie Silvey scored 23 points for the second-straight game as the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team came up just short against the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders by the score of 62-61.
"I told our team we can't get down on this; we have to hold our heads high," said head coach Cindy Stein. "We battled, we did a lot of good things, and I feel like we're getting better. What I saw out of our team was a toughness right from the get-go."
Middle Tennessee, a Conference-USA school, was another in a tough line of non-conference games. Southern led off the season at ranked SEC foe Tennessee, and will close out the non-conference schedule with back-to-back matchups against Big 10 programs.
"When we put out this non-conference schedule we knew it was going to be tough," said Stein. "I didn't want to gauge our success by wins and losses; it's 'Are we getting better?' We're working on winning the Missouri Valley Conference, and we wanted to play teams that will challenge us like this."
Silvey's 23 points led the Salukis while Abby Brockmeyer achieved her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 19 points and grabbing 13 boards. Southern dominated the rebounding battle 44-30, led by Brockmeyer. Silvey was second on the team with nine rebounds, followed by Gabby Walker with five. This marked the sixth-straight game the Salukis have outrebounded their opponents.
Freshman Laniah Randle saw solid action for the second-straight game, leading the Saluki bench with seven points in just 12 minutes played. Randle also grabbed a pair of steals and a pair of rebounds.
Southern returns to Banterra Center on Sunday at 2 p.m. as the Salukis will host the University of Illinois.
