CARBONDALE, Ill. — Two Salukis grabbed double-doubles and three scored in double figures to help the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team defeat the Valparaiso University Beacons, 62-52, Sunday afternoon inside Banterra Center.
The win came in Southern's first Missouri Valley Conference game of the season; the Salukis have won every conference opener in the Cindy Stein era. The victory also ended a three-game skid for the Salukis against Valparaiso.
"Valpo is a tough team to guard, and they do a lot of things defensively that can make it really ugly," said Stein. "Our kids did a great job of playing gritty basketball."
Success in the post was key for the Salukis, as both Abby Brockmeyer (19 points, 12 rebounds) and Gabby Walker (17 points, 10 rebounds) notched double-doubles. This is the first time two Salukis have achieved double-doubles in one game since Jan. 13, 2017, when Kim Nebo and Rishonda Napier accomplished the feat against Wichita State.
"I feel like Gabby and Abby can get double-doubles all the time," said Stein. "They both did a tremendous job today on the boards."
Southern won the rebounding battle, grabbing 43 boards while holding Valparaiso to 29. The Beacons had just four offensive rebounds all game, while being kept to zero second chance points.
"That was really important because Valpo's scrappy," said Stein. "We had to fight for everything."
Joining Brockmeyer and Walker in double figures was Makenzie Silvey with 18 points scored. Silvey has now scored at least 13 points in eight of Southern's 11 games this season.
The Salukis continue MVC play Sunday at noon against the Loyola Chicago Ramblers. The game will broadcast locally on Magic 95.1 and will stream online on ESPN+.
