MACOMB, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team came up just short Saturday night, losing on day two of the Compass Challenge by a score of 85-80 to host Western Illinois in a game that saw five Salukis score in double-figures. The back-and-forth battle was the first loss for Southern in all-time Compass Challenge play.
"I felt like this was a hard, gritty game," said head coach Cindy Stein. "I felt like we got better this weekend."
The Salukis benefited from another stand-out performance from Abby Brockmeyer, who had 17 points and 18 rebounds, thereby setting a new career high rebounds mark in two-straight days after grabbing 16 boards on Friday against Eastern Illinois. Brockmeyer averaged 25.5 points and 17 rebounds per game in the two-day tournament.
"I would be shocked if she's not the MVP of this tournament," said Stein. "She was unstoppable on the boards, she was unstoppable in the paint, she had four assists today, so she was doing it all for us all weekend."
Brockmeyer has now posted a double-double in three of the Salukis' five games thus far, and has scored at least 14 points in four games. She is currently averaging 18 points per game, as well as 12.4 rebounds per game.
Four other Salukis scored at least 10 points Saturday night. Gabby Walker was second in scoring for Southern, putting up 16 points and seven boards. Makenzie Silvey scored 15 while adding six rebounds and seven assists. Caitlin Link and Payton McCallister scored 12 and 11 points; the two combined for seven of Southern's nine three-pointers on the night. This was the first time this season the Salukis have had five in double-figures.
Southern won the rebounding battle 34-29, including 12 offensive boards. The Salukis have now out-rebounded their opponents in three-straight games.
SIU will return home for the first time this season on Sunday, Dec. 12th at 2 p.m. against Quincy University.
