Salukis Draw in First MVC Contest

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- As the league's newest members, Southern Illinois' women's soccer program drew, 0-0, in double-overtime to Missouri Valley opponent Valparaiso, on a rain-filled and overcast afternoon on Sunday in Carbondale. Sophomore goaltender, Maddy Alaluf earned the second start of her career and defended in all 110 minutes of the match in front of the Salukis' net.
"Every time we play, we want to have a good result. Every point that you can earn in Valley play is a valued one." said head coach, Grant Williams. "I think we did a great job competing from the first minute. We had the front foot many times, they had the front foot many times -- it's what you expect from two teams fighting for post-season Valley play."
The midfield-heavy match concluded with a steady three saves from Alaluf, followed by shots to Valpo's net by the Salukis front movement of Hailey Blanchard, Sam DeJulio, and Maya Warrior -- tying with her career game-high, two shots. Shots-on-goal came from senior defender Kathryn Creedon and freshman midfielder Ashlyn Henrie, late in second overtime and recording the first SOG of her career.
Early in the second half of play, both the Brown and Gold and Salukis' Tahelah Noel and Georgina Franco received yellow cards, yet Southern bounced on offense, recording a season-high (four total) corner kicks with attacking plays to make it in the back of Valparaiso's net.
"Looking ahead, we have a quick week ahead of us [with Indiana State on Friday]. We're not quite clicking with the attacking third, that will be our focus this week: how do we create more dangerous opportunities over the course of 90 minutes."
With the third draw in program history, it brings SIU's 2020-21 record to 0-1-1 with seven more conference contests on the schedule.
SIU's next match is their first road trip, heading to Terre Haute to face the Sycamores of Indiana State on Friday, March 5 at 1pm.
