Women’s Golf Wins Battle Between Southern and Bradley

CARBONDALE, ILL. — After trailing by 3-strokes at the end of the first day of play, Southern Illinois women's golf rallied back to win the Battle Between Southern and Bradley. SIU shot 293 (+5) in Sunday's final round at Hickory Ridge to claim a 6-shot victory in the 36-hole duel between visiting Bradley.
Senior Emilyee McGiles took the individual title, posting a competition best even-par 72 on the last day of play to finish with a score of 146 (+2).
"Emilyee led us and took the win individually," said SIU head coach Danielle Kaufman. "She has worked very hard to get where she is. I'm proud of her commitment to the game and how well she competed today."
Sophomore Ayanna Habeel earned her second Top-5 finish of the spring season by taking third at 149 (+5). Fifth-year Erica Kerr followed closely and tied for fourth at 6-over with 2 birdies on the day. Senior Moyea Russell shot 1-over in the final round to finish at 154 (+10), tied for 10th, and junior Rosemarie Bundy fired 80 on the day to round out the Salukis score at 596 (+20).
All in all, five Salukis claimed top-10 individual finishes. Freshman Janie Samattiyadeekul competed as an individual and posted 76 to finish tied for sixth at 151 (+7). Southern Illinois had five players competing as individuals in the duel. Amelia Lawson posted 4-over 72 in the final round and finished in 14th place (+12). Hollie James carded 78 to finish tied for 12th place at 155 (+11). Secilia Ho finished tied for 16th place at 158 (+14) and Megan Breslin posted 163 (+9) to finish tied for 18th place.
"I'm extremely proud of this team," added Kaufman. "They adjusted from yesterday and came out ready & focused. Every player today impressed me and showed a lot of grit."
The Salukis return to action in less than a week at the Bama Beach Bash on Friday, March 19 at Gulf Shores Country Club in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
