CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Saluki women's soccer team falls to the Panthers of Northern Iowa, 0-5, on Sunday afternoon in Lew Hartzog Complex. It was the first game since March 5 that the Salukis had let a goal past.
"This is a tough one. I didn't have our kids prepared to be in a place to be the most successful." said head coach Grant Williams. "We are still a young team, when faced with a little adversity today, I don't think we quite knew how to handle that, it can snowball on you."
The Panthers started shooting from the start, bringing in the first score by an attack across the box by forward Ashley Harrington, from a pass by defender Shelby Unruh at the 14-minute mark. Within another minute, the Panthers scored off of a corner, kicked in play by Harrington and executed out unassisted by defender Allison Whitaker. The last goal of the first half for UNI was at the 32nd minute, where Panther forward Sophia Conant broke away on the one-on-one with defender Kathryn Creedon to the net, brining the score 0-3 at halftime.
Northern Iowa finished off the second half with an unassisted attack to the net by forward Lauren Heinsch at the 47th minute, and finalized the 0-5 score of the afternoon with a goal from a corner, headed in by defender Sandra Thiman after being kicked in by Harrington.
With the young team ahead of him, coach notes the progress the Salukis are seeing, "From a purely soccer standpoint, that first 15 minutes when you look at our spacing and combination going forward, I'm very encouraged with those things. It's unfortunate that you don't always reap the benefits of that."
Sophomore keeper Dariana Mihalache saw the field for the first time this season, recording four saves in her 68 minutes of action. Goaltender Nicole Raventos took over the job with 24 minutes left on the clock to give herself an additional four saves on the season. In the back, SIU saw multiple blocks and hard defense reaching for the corners by Georgina Franco and Katy Quinn throughout the 90 minutes.
On the attack, forward Kaitlin DuCharme gave the Salukis a shot-on-goal in the left corner, making Northern Iowa's keeper, Caitlin Richards dive down. With addtional shots taken to the Panther's goal by Emma Spotak and Madison Meiring.
"People say that home runs in baseball are the hardest thing to do in sports, I would say scoring goals is. Everyone knows where you are going and you have somebody guarding the goal outright. We have done some very great things, we just need to be a little more clinical in our technical performance in the final third."
The Salukis' next game is on the road against the defending MVC Champion Loyola in Chicago on March 28, at 11am.
