FLORENCE, Ala. -- Southern Illinois took their first double-overtime draw, 0-0, to ASUN opponent North Alabama, Sunday afternoon in Florence. The Salukis played a strong offensive match, outshooting the Lions 16 shots to eight, and already tying last season's individual-game high in shots. Back towards the net, junior keeper Maddy Alaluf garnered the tenth start of her career and played a full 110 in Maroon while notching three saves in the second half.
The Salukis came out strong on the attack, drawing up two corners in the first half, with near goal opportunities just blocked by UNA's keeper Payton Yates by defender Kylie McDermott (1SH, 1SOG), and midfielder Ashley Scesniak (1SH). Both freshman were tabbed in the starting lineup in the afternoon. Leading the pack on the offense was forward Emma Spotak, ranking in four shots with two on-goal, bringing the Lions' defense out of the box into dangerous territory, and forward Kaitlin DuCharme, who collected three shots and two shots-on-goal in 110 minutes.
Toward the Saluki net, keeper Maddy Alaluf played as a wall the entire contest, with assistance from junior defender Georgina Franco -- who clocked in 101 minutes after playing a full 90 against UT-Martin on Thursday -- taking the ball to the outside corners and making prominent blocks for the Maroon and White. Junior Katy Quinn also had a big game for the back-end. The Bloomington, Illinois-native notched two shots and two on-goal as a defender, bringing the speed for the Salukis. SIU held to a .500 shots-on-goal percentage, while playing smart ball in six corners and two fouls in the game.
