
Salukis to Host Kansas City for Home Opener Friday

CARBONDALE, Illinois -- The SIU Salukis (0-1-1) host the Summit League Roos of Kansas City (1-1), Friday evening under the lights at Lew Hartzog Complex, for the Salukis' home opener of the regular season at 7pm. The match is open to the public, concessions are available, and fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Live stats for the contest are posted here.
A Look at Last Game:Â The Salukis completed a strong draw against North Alabama, Sunday afternoon. The 0-0 double-overtime match up recorded 16 shots for SIU -- tying last season's single-game high, with junior forward Emma Spotak leading the pack with four shots and two on-goal in 110 minutes. Keeper Maddy Alaluf was a wall in front of the net for the Maroon and White, recording three saves with the Lion's eight shots towards the Saluki net. Defender Katy Quinn posted 94 minutes and two shots with two on-goal, bringing the back-end up to the attacking net.
So far in 2021: The 0-1-1 Dawgs dropped to UT-Martin, 0-2, during their 2021 season opener on Thursday. The midfield-heavy match showcased junior forward Kaitlin DuCharme notching two shots and one on-goal for the Salukis in the 90-minute contest. SIU ranks sixth in the Valley in overall shots (18), while keeper Alaluf is tied for fifth in goals-against-average, holding strong at .900 percent. DuCharme is tied for second in the league in shots-on-goal average (1.5), two games into the regular season.
Returning Talent: SIU sees the return of 21, losing one starter from last season. Back in front of the net is junior keeper Maddy Alaluf (1.70 GAA, 0-5-3, 35 saves, 3 SHO), who finished sixth in saves percentage (.729) and fourth in saves per game (4.38) in the MVC. Attacking the goal is junior Kaitlin DuCharme (1G, 19 SH, 9 SOG), who finished her 2020-21 campaign with a goal against Missouri State on April 7, and ranked sixth in shots (19) in the Valley. The Salukis also see the return of 2020-21 All-MVC Second Team nominee, junior forward Emma Spotak. Spotak was the first player in program history to be tabbed with conference post-season honors.Â
Scouting Kansas City: The Roos finished 4-12-1 (4-11-1 Summit) in the 2020-21 spring soccer season, with the lone non-conference match coming against Saint Louis, which resulted in a 1-4 loss to Kansas City. The Summit League competed in a near conference-only schedule last season, each team playing their opponent twice and Kansas City missing the post-season and finished seventh in the league.
Being the first meeting between the Salukis and Roos, Kansas City comes to Carbondale with a 0-4 loss to (RV) Wisconsin and overcoming fellow Valley opponent Missouri State 2-1 on Sunday.

Sophomore Ashlyn Henrie has shined in her second season with SIU so far, recording one goal and one assist in the three games. The Dawgs opened exhibition play on Wednesday, drawing 1-1 to Southeast Missouri, while falling to UIC 0-1 on Friday, and turning up another 1-1 draw to Belmont in exhibition. Four freshmen and seven of ten Saluki newcomers saw action in the preseason.
