Men’s Golf Place 3rd at Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invite

In their first action of the spring, the Southern Illinois men's golf team took third place at the 2022 Pizza Hut-Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational. The Salukis fired rounds of 284, 285, and 284 to finish 11-under-par with a total of 853. Middle Tennessee State took first place with a score of 826 (-38) and Oral Roberts finished runner-up at 848 (-16).
It was a solid weekend for Southern Illinois, who rattled off 57 birdies and had three golfers finish Top-25. Matthis Besard continued his dominant year, leading the way for SIU with a second place overall finish at 12-under par (204). Besard is now the all-time leader in career rounds in the 60s in SIU men's golf program history after carding rounds of 67, 69, and 68.
Markus Wilhelmsen posted 70 in Sunday's final round at Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, Utah to finish at 4-under par (212), tied for 11th place. Birgir Magnusson tied for 23rd with rounds of 76, 79, and 72 for a total score of 217 (+1). Justin Wingerter closed out the competition with a score of 220 (+4) to tie for 38th place and Tom Cleaton finished in 82nd with a score of 237 (+21). Andrew Thornton competed as an individual and finished tied for 71st with a final score of 231 (+15).
What's Next
The Salukis return to Carbondale, Illinois to prepare for the Savannah Harbor Invitational, hosted by William & Mary, on February 19-20 in Williamsburg, Virginia.
