
Salukis Win 80-66 on Senior Day

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team finished the regular season undefeated at home on Saturday afternoon in an 80-66 victory over the Evansville Purple Aces. With an 11-0 home record, the Salukis (19-7, 13-2) have achieved a regular season with an unblemished home slate for the first time since the 1986-87 season.
"Winning at home is huge if you want to have any success in our conference," said head coach Cindy Stein,
Saturday was also Senior Day, as Abby Brockmeyer, Makenzie Silvey, Gabby Walker, Caitlin Link, Payton McCallister and Awa Keita saw their final home game as Salukis.
"I'm really proud of this group. Our seniors have done a great job all year of leading our team in the culture, leading our team in work ethic and keeping the group together," said Stein. "It's been really fun to coach this team."
With the win, the Salukis maintain a one-game lead over Missouri State atop the Missouri Valley Conference standings.
Four Salukis scored in double figures, led by Abby Brockmeyer with 19. Brockmeyer notched a MVC-leading thirteenth double-double as she grabbed 13 boards in the contest. Makenzie Silvey scored 18 points while also being active on defense, grabbing four steals. Gabby Walker scored 13 points and grabbed nine boards, while Caitlin Link tied her season-high with 12 points.
Southern was one point away from all five starters scoring in double figures, as Quierra Love finished with nine points in the game. Love also contributed four steals and a game-high six assists, and was instrumental in repeatedly breaking the Purple Aces' press defense well into the second half.
The Salukis shot 16-of-18 (88.9%) from the free-throw line in the contest, Southern also forced Evansville into 20 turnovers in the game, scoring 26 points off of said turnovers.
Southern returns to action Thursday for a 6 p.m. tip against Loyola-Chicago, before finishing the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Valparaiso.
