
O'Neal, Lancaster, and Moore-Jones Ready for NCAA Championships

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Three Salukis have extended their indoor season and now travel to Birmingham, Ala., to compete in the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships on March 11-12 at the Birmingham Crossplex. The three student-athletes representing Southern Illinois University are Shauniece O'Neal and Elisia Lancaster in the weight throw, and A'veun Moore-Jones in the shot put.
Both Shauniece O'Neal and A'veun Moore-Jones make their second straight appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships. O'Neal was able to place 7th in last years championships with a mark of 21.77m. A'veun Moore-Jones returns to the NCAA's after finishing 14th one year ago (15.99m).
The 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships will start at 10 a.m. CT on Friday with the men's heptathalon event. The women's weight throw preliminary round will start Friday night at 7:00 p.m. Both O'Neal and Lancaster will compete in a single preliminary flight of 16, with finals for the event immediately following. O'Neal will be the 4th athlete off, Lancaster will be the 13th.
Day two of the NCAA Championships gets underway with more Heptathalon events at 10:30 a.m. The women's shot put event is scheduled to begin Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. A'veun Moore-Jones is scheduled to be the 16th and final athlete to compete in the field.

NCAA Qualifying Marks
Shauniece O'Neal sits at the No. 5 mark in the nation with her weight throw personal-best distance of 23.11m (75' 10"), which she achieved at the 2022 MVC Indoor Championships. A'veun Moore-Jones holds the 8th-best mark in the shot put with a distance of 17.58m (57' 8.25"). Elisia Lancaster qualifies with the 11th best mark in the NCAA weight throw at 22.51m (73' 10.25").
Historical Perspective from the National Indoor Meet
Since 1962, the Salukis have had 19 individual national champions. DeAnna Price is Southern Illinois' most recent individual champion, as she took home gold at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the hammer. 20 Saluki athletes have gone on to finish as national runners-up, with Kyle Landon (indoor, high jump) being the last to do so in 2017.
In all, 21 female Saluki track and field athletes have earned indoor All-American honors.
