
Four Salukis set to compete at NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – The Saluki Track and Field program will have four student-athletes compete in the 2022 NCAA Championships on Thursday in Eugene, Oregon. The four entries representing SIU are the most out of any Missouri Valley School. Thursday's action will be broadcasted on ESPNU.
Elisia Lancaster is making her first appearance at the NCAA Championships. Lancaster qualified 9th out of the West Regional in the hammer throw with a mark of 65.38m (214' 6"). Her season-best mark came at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships where she launched 67.16m (220' 4"). That distance won her the MVC title.
Shauniece O'Neal is the second Saluki to qualify in the hammer throw. O'Neal placed 10th in the West Regional, one spot behind her teammate. O'Neal marked at 65.34m (214' 6") to advance to Eugene for the third time in her career. Her season-best mark came at the Illini Invitational where she threw 67.04m (219' 11").
A'veun Moore-Jones, competing in shot put, will make her second trip to the National meet in as many years. She placed fourth in the NCAA West Prelims with a mark of 17.33m (56' 10.25"). That mark was a new personal best for Moore-Jones in the outdoor shot.
Kayla Schiera is the lone runner for SIU to make it to Eugene where she will be competing in the 3000m Steeplechase. She advances to Nationals for the first time in her career after placing 11th at the West Regionals with a time of 10:07.62. Schiera ran a personal best time of 9:58.24 at the MVC Championships which ultimately won her the title in the steeplechase event. That time was a meet record and also broke her own SIU record which she set earlier this outdoor season.
