Women's Golf wraps up UAB Hoover Invitational

The Southern Illinois Women's Golf Team wrapped up play at the UAB Hoover Invitational on Tuesday and finished ninth as its next tournament takes them west next week for the Golfweek Red Sky Classic in Colorado.

The Salukis finished ninth with a score of 930 while South Alabama and Southern Mississippi each finished with a score of 881. South Alabama was then deemed the winner in a scorecard playoff.

South Alabama also had the individual medalist as Greta Rietford finished with a 70-71-70-213 (-3) to be the only player under par. Southern was led by Janie Samattiyadeekul as she tied for 24th at 79-73-77-229 (+13). Samattiyadeekul's second round score of 73 was the tournament low for the Salukis.

Head coach Cindy Bodmer said while the finish wasn't what they wanted, they had a different leader each of the three rounds and it's still a long season.

"It's early in the year and the players are still trying to learn their games, strengths and weaknesses," Bodmer said. "But I do know there is no quit in this team."

Ayanna Habeel finished T42 for the Salukis as she shot 77-83-75 (235) while Kylee Vaughan tied for 46th with a 79-74-83 (236).

Bodmer said she was excited to see consistent play from freshman Ella Overstreet and she's now competed in two collegiate tournaments. Overstreet finished T49 with rounds of 80-78-79 (237). Secilia Ho finished T54 with a 82-79-80 (241). Morgan Gindler tied for 57th while Adriana Vinterova finished 59th.

Southern next plays Sept 26-27 in Wolcott, Colorado, for the Golfweek Red Sky Classic at Red Sky Golf Club.
