Braden Hoisington finishes 6th
After posting rounds of 299 and 290 during the first 36 holes on Monday, SIU Director of Golf Justin Fetcho challenged his team ahead of the final 18 at Gateway National in Madison, Ill.Â
"We had a tough start to the event but we made it our goal to shoot the low round of the day today and we were able to accomplish that goal," he said. "We have a team of fighters that don't give up and you love to see that as a coach. We are continuing to have way too many unforced errors to allow ourselves to be in contention to win golf tournaments right now. We have to become better at when we are out of position, getting that ball back in position. We also have to become more disciplined in our mindset to help minimize damage."
Southern's perseverance led to a jump the final day to cut the deficit to nine strokes as Idaho took the tournament title with rounds of 286-290-289 for a tournament total of 865. Weber State finished second with a 867. Southern finished with an 874.Â
Southeast Louisiana's Charlie Forster took home medalist honors after he and Bradley's Josh Kirkham each shot a 206 for the tournament. Forster won the event on the first playoff hole.
Sophomore Braden Hoisington led the Salukis with a sixth-place finish, his third top-10 as a Southern golfer. Hoisington shot a 73-73-67 to register a 213, his career-low. His round of 67 was one of the best of the tournament.Â
"I've been playing good golf all semester and today I was finally able to let myself play good golf in a tournament," he said.Â
Hoisington has already registered several strong rounds this season and said it's only going to help going forward.Â
"I had a solid weekend that is going to build a lot of momentum going into the end of the fall season," he said. "As a team we are doing a lot of great things that once we clean up some minor imperfections, we are going to be very competitive in Georgia and Iowa."
Hoisington wasn't the only Saluki golfer to register a career low during the tournament as freshman Blake Skornia also turned in a tournament to remember.
Skornia, who's father played quarterback for the Salukis, had rounds of 75-71-70 to shoot a 216 (+3) to register his first top-10 finish as he finished tied for ninth.Â
"I'm very encouraged by the play of Braden and Blake this week," Fetcho said. "To have a sophomore and freshman finish in the Top-10 shows that we have some great young talent on the roster. They have both been working very hard on their games and to have a nice result to back up their hard work has to be very satisfying for them. I look forward to watching their growth over the next few years in their games and mindset."
Hugo Archer tied for 16th as he shot a 77-69-72-218 (+5) with Markus Wilhelmsen also finishing in the top-20 as an individual. Wilhelmsen shot a final round -1 to finish with a 71-78-70-219(+6) to finish start after a tough second round.Â
