CARBONDALE, Ill. - Despite having a strong fourth quarter, the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (1-1) fell to Cornell, 80-77, on Saturday at the Banterra Center.Â
"Proud of my young ladies' efforts of fighting back in the fourth quarter," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "We just weren't very disciplined tonight. Anytime you put a team on the line to shoot 39 free throws, it's going to be a long night."
The Big Red shot 74.4% at the free throw line in its 39 attempts.Â
Southern Illinois led after one, 19-15, limiting Cornell to just 4-of-11 shooting from the field in the opening 10 minutes. Besides the final quarter, this would be the lowest field-goal percentage (36.36%) of the game for the Big Red.Â
Cornell bounced-back in the second quarter, scoring 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting. At the end of the opening half, the Big Red had already attempted 18 free throws, converting on 11 of them.
Both teams shot the ball well in the third, with the Big Red out-scoring the Salukis, 28-23, in the quarter. SIU had its most success offensively in this part of the game, shooting 8-of-16 from the field.
In the fourth, Laniah Randle hit a layup to tie the game at 73-73 with 3:42 remaining. Around 30 seconds later, Shemera Williams scored in the paint to give the Salukis the late lead. Cornell's Emily Pape, however, drilled a three to put the Big Red up 76-75. Pape led all scorers with 26 points.
The Big Red was able to close-out the final few minutes, winning by a final score of 80-77.
Southern was led by Williams' 19 points, followed by Jaidynn Mason's 18.Â
SIU will remain at home for its next game, which will be on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m. vs. Purdue Fort Wayne.
