BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Southern Illinois University track and field finished its two-day meet at the Indiana Invitational on Saturday, where it competed against schools such as Cincinnati, Dayton, Evansville, Indiana, Indiana State, Marshall and Miami (Ohio).
"The early part of the season is over and we're now getting into the core," SIU Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Richard Jones said. "We had some good marks and wins here and there and can focus on refining things these next few weeks."
Field events were the strongest early on, as Christine Nosike placed eighth in the women's shot put, throwing a season-best 12.68 meters.Â
Moments later, junior Darius Fuller (14.60m) and fifth-year senior Caleb Carter (13.44m) finished first and second in the triple jump, one week removed from posting personal records in the same event.
Jalynn Wood placed eighth with a season-best 3.52 meters in the pole vault.
After placing third in Friday's preliminary round, Jadon Robertson (8.16) led off the track events with a first-place finish in the men's 60-meter hurdles.
KeyAnn Wilson added a solid second-place finish in the women's 60-meter dash with a time of 7.79.
Sophomore Shane Ashton (48.95) won first place in the men's 400-meter dash and freshman Nikyan Hodge set a personal record.
The Salukis also set a season-best in the women's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:58.43 thanks to Miracle Berry, Vashti Grey, Christina Rene and Teanna Bell.
As the season continues, Jones knows the time for the team to be at its peak is right around the corner.
"We can improve on some fitness and getting competition-sharp in a few weeks, then we get championship-sharp after that."
UP NEXT
The Salukis will head northeast to Boston, Mass. to compete in the John Thomas Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University on Friday.
