MURRAY, Ky. - In a road battle that came down to the final minutes of the fourth quarter, Southern Illinois University's women's basketball team (7-11, 2-6 MVC) fell on the road, 75-70, against Murray State.
The Racers came into the game averaging around 91.0 points-per-game, which was second in the nation. The 75 points they scored were tied for the fewest they've scored in a game this season.
Southern Illinois held the Racers to just eight points in the opening 10 minutes, while the Salukis scored 12. Murray State shot 3-of-12 from the field and had six turnovers, while Seairra Hughes and Jaidynn Mason both tallied two steals each.
In the second quarter, SIU out-scored Murray State, 17-15, to take a 29-23 lead into the halftime break. Laniah Randle paced the Salukis with 10 points and six rebounds in the first half.
Murray State's high-powered offense heated-up in the third quarter, scoring 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field. Entering the fourth, the Racers led, 46-43.
The Racers continued its strong second half in the fourth, posting a game-high 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting and went 5-of-10 from deep to earn the 75-70 win.
Mason led the team with 20 points, while Randle posted a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double.
SIU, now 7-11 overall and 2-6 in Missouri Valley Conference play, will travel to Belmont on Sunday at 2 p.m. for its next game.
