CARBONDALE, Ill. - Despite a 28-point third quarter, Southern Illinois University's women's basketball team (0-3) came up short on Wednesday night against the University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM), falling by a final score of 79-66.
"Our kids competed on both sides of the ball," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "I'm super proud of their effort. In the first half, the difference in the game was offensive rebounds. We gave up 15 offensive rebounds which contributed to over half of their scoring. Our first-shot defense was incredible, but we gave up those boards."
Overall, the Salukis were out-rebounded, 43-28, by the Warhawks. After posting 15 offensive rebounds in the first half, ULM pulled down just three in the final two quarters.
Four different players for Southern Illinois scored in double-figures, with Gift Uchenna's 16 leading the way. Uchenna was followed up by Tyranny Brown's 14, Kayla Cooper's 12, and Isabella Palmqvist's 11.
In the first quarter, Louisiana Monroe out-scored SIU, 19-11, after holding the Salukis to just 33.3% shooting from the field. Southern allowed nine offensive rebounds, which led to nine second chance points for the Warhawks. The visitors shot 40.0% from the field to start the game.
Southern got going on both ends in the second quarter, out-scoring ULM, 15-12. The Salukis shot 44.4% from the field, but were 3-of-5 from deep and 4-of-4 at the free throw line. Turnovers piled up for the hosts, however, as they had 12 turnovers in the frame as opposed to the Warhawks' seven.
Louisiana Monroe held a 31-26 lead at the end of the first half. Palmqvist, Cooper, and Uchenna all had six points in the opening 20 minutes.
The Salukis' strongest offensive quarter of the season came in the third, when Southern scored 28 points on 56.3% shooting from the field and 3-of-6 shooting from deep. Brown scored 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting with one three-pointer and a perfect 4-of-4 line at the charity stripe.
With one quarter remaining, SIU trailed ULM, 55-54.
The Warhawks turned things around defensively in the fourth, out-scoring the Salukis, 24-12, to win by a final score of 79-66.
As a team, Southern Illinois posted a field-goal percentage of 43.4%, three-point percentage of 53.3%, and a free throw percentage of 70.6%. Alice Curman's eight assists were a team-high, while Tkiyah Nelson paced the Salukis with three steals.
SIU finished the game with 26 turnovers while Louisiana Monroe had 17.
"The turnover situation is because we're doing what I've asked them to do in terms of drawing two people," Bond-White said. "Our young ladies are trying to make something happen and instead of just kicking the ball out, we're trying to force it."
Southern Illinois will now head back out on the road on Saturday to face IU Indy at 4 p.m. (CT) in Indianapolis, Ind.
