WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Southern Illinois swimming and diving team closed out the first day of the Purdue Invite with record-breaking performances.
Southern Illinois set three program records throughout the day, beginning with Celia Pulido, who set a new program record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.58 during the preliminary session. The relay group of Pulido, Olivia Herron, Bea Padron, and Susana Hernandez set two records in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard medley relay.
Prelims
In the first event, Joshua Aceves and Tomas Peciar qualified for the "A" finals in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively.
Olivia Herron claimed first place in the 200-yard individual medley (IM) with a time of 1:58.87. Liseska Gallegos and Brooklyn Anderson also qualified for the "A" finals, finishing sixth and eighth, respectively. Henrique Pacheco finished third in the men's race with a time of 1:48.70.
In the 50-yard freestyle, four Salukis qualified for the "A" finals in the men's event. Alex Santiago took first place with a time of 19.47, while Donut Csuvarszki finished third. Willem Huggins and AJ Terry placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
In the women's 50-yard freestyle, Pulido achieved a record-setting second-place finish, and Hernandez also qualified for the "A" finals with an eighth-place finish.
Finals
In the 200-yard medley relay time trials, the team of Pulido, Herron, Padron, and Hernandez set a new program record with a time of 1:37.21.
In the men's 400-yard medley relay, the Saluki group of Huggins, Tiago Faleiros, Nico Lanuza, and Terry earned a third-place finish with a time of 3:12.07.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Peciar placed fourth, followed closely by Aceves in fifth.
Herron secured first place in the 200-yard IM finals with an NCAA "B" standard time of 1:57.70. Gallegos and Anderson added top-eight finishes, placing fifth and eighth, respectively. In the men's 200-yard IM final, Pacheco finished fourth with a time of 1:48.25.
Santiago earned first place in the men's 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.45, also meeting NCAA "B" standards. Csuvarszki finished third in the event with a time of 20.11.
In the women's 50-yard freestyle, Hernandez finished sixth, and Zaria Terry placed eighth.
The record-setting women's 400-yard medley relay team of Pulido, Herron, Padron, and Hernandez claimed first place, setting new program and Missouri Valley Conference records.
Day two of the Purdue Invite continues tomorrow, with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.
