NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Southern Illinois track and field gained some momentum after an impressive day two at the Music City Challenge Saturday in Nashville, Tenn.
"We had some good runs and performances," Director of Track and Field Richard Jones said. "There were a few athletes that were able to get a good competition under their belt and come away with some victories and personal records."
The freshmen got things going in the right direction early on.
Hannah Meiser set a season-best time of 10:27.62 in the women's 3000-meter run, and Xavier Moore hit a season-best mark in the shot put throwing 12.66 meters.
The sprinters set things in motion sending four Salukis to the second round of the 60-meter dash.
Shavell Riley set a personal record of 7.54 in the event, and Keyann Wilson joined her in the second round of the women's competition. Riley would advance to the finals.
Christian Donatelli and Caleb Massiah ran a 6.90 and 7.00, respectively, which was good enough to advance them to the finals on the men's side.
The Salukis also dominated the men's 60-meter hurdles, placing three in the top 11 of the qualifying round.
Daryl Okeke finished first in the qualifying round and set a personal record with a time of 8.09. Jadon Robertson and Christian Coleman joined him in the next round.
Jeremiah Hamilton (48.26), Nikyan Hodge (50.40) and Marius Coleman (50.72) each set personal records in the men's 400-meter run.
Hodge, Xavier Preston, Coleman and Hamilton then combined for a season-best in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3.16.25.
Full results can be found via PrimeTime Timing.
"Next week gives some athletes an opportunity to either rest or improve on their season marks," Jones said.
