CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (7-15, 2-10 MVC) fell to Belmont, 65-55, at home on Sunday.
"Our rotations were just off," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "We were a little too deep in help side and not moving on the airtime of the ball, so they took advantage of that."
Belmont was dominant offensively in the early minutes, starting the game on an 8-0 run through the first two minutes. The Bruins shot a perfect 7-of-7 from the field and 5-of-5 from deep in the early going.
The Salukis improved on the defensive end after this run, but still trailed, 21-12, at the end of the first quarter.
Southern responded well in the second, holding the Bruins to just 11 points while it scored 17. At the halftime break, SIU was down, 32-29. Jaidynn Mason posted a team-high nine points in the opening half.
In the third quarter, Belmont shot 3-of-12 from the field, but made up for this with a 13-of-13 performance at the free throw line in the period. The Bruins out-scored the Salukis, 21-15, in the third.
Neither team got going offensively in the fourth, as Belmont was held to 12 points while SIU was held to 11, leading to the final score being 65-55 in favor of the Bruins.
The Salukis shot 34.9% from the field, 13.3% from deep, and 60.0% at the charity stripe in Sunday's game. Mason led the team with 19 points.
Southern Illinois, now 7-15 overall and 2-10 in Missouri Valley Conference play, will go out on the road for a four-game road trip, starting on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Evansville.
