Preview | Track and Field outdoor season opens in Tampa

CARBONDALE, Ill. -Â The Southern Illinois track and field team opens the outdoor season at the USF Alumni Invitational Friday, March 15, in Tampa, Fla.Â
The meet will include 20 schools:Â Ohio State, Michigan, Purdue, Iowa, Iowa State, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Florida Atlantic, Kentucky, Temple, Vanderbilt, St. John's, Ball State, Troy, Howard, Bethune-Cookman, Grand Valley State, USF, University of Tampa and Florida Gulf Coast.
Field events will begin at 10 a.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday. Track events begin at 5 p.m. Friday and at 12:25 p.m. Saturday. All times Eastern.
The Salukis indoor season ended at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships, where the men finished fifth and the women finished seventh.
10 different athletes medaled including Xavier Preston and Iaunia Pointer, both of whom won gold in the 200-meter dash. The Salukis also won the men's 4x400 relay; Bryson Wilson, Xavier Preston, Marius Coleman, and Jeremiah Hamilton all contributed.
Several Salukis compiled personal records at the championships as well, showing some positive signs as the indoor season came to a close.
Despite some success, Director of Track and Field Richard Jones said the team had a lot of work to do in preparation for the outdoor season.
