MURRAY, Ky. - Southern Illinois track and field racked up three victories and a total of five top-three finishes on day two of the Margaret Simmons Invitational Saturday at Murray State.Â
The Salukis only sent 15 athletes, but there was still much to take from the two days of the meet.
"Every opportunity to compete is valuable to the development of the team," Director of Track and Field Richard Jones said. "The coaches can take these results and build on this for upcoming meets."
The 1500-meter run was a strength to begin the day, as Josh Delgado won the event with a time of 3:59.22. Ansley Bailey began her big day by running a personal record 4:52.64, beating her previous mark by nearly five whole seconds.
After finishing first and second in the 110-meter hurdles prelims, Christian Coleman (14.66) and Daryl Okeke (15.14) repeated the feat in the finals. Coleman's time was a personal record.
Later, Bailey and Brianna Nieset finished first and second in the 800-meter run, marking the third time the Salukis had accomplished that on the weekend. The victory was the first for Bailey since February 11, 2022, during her freshman season.
Assistant Track and Field Coach Brian Biekert is very pleased with the state of his distance runners after a solid two days.
"Going into the meet we talk about not worrying about times and just competing," he said. "The group was able to execute that goal and grabbed a couple wins in the process."
The Southern Illinois men finished fifth with a team score of 65, and the women's team score of 19 slotted them in ninth.
