SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Battling wet conditions and multiple start times with Thursday's series opener on the road at Missouri State, Southern Illinois baseball fell to the Bears, 11-4, at Hammonds Field.
Trailing 6-4 entering the eighth inning, Southern Illinois allowed five runs as Missouri State broke the game open late and cruised to the win in the opener.
Overall, the Bears outhit Southern 13-9 in the game, but the difference was the long ball as Missouri State hit three in the game, including a three-run shot in the eighth inning.
Missouri State jumped out to an early lead in the first before SIU tied the game in the second on Jake Allgeyer's sacrifice fly. Logan Chambers gave MSU the lead in the bottom half with the Bears' first home run of the game – a solo shot to left field.
The Salukis took their first lead of the game in the fifth inning when Nathan Bandy and Mathieu Vallee recorded one-out singles.
It was a four-run bottom of the fifth that cemented the game as Missouri State never looked back. A Caden Bogenpohl two-run double gave the Bears the lead before Dylan Leach hit a two-run home run to make it 6-3.
The Salukis left the bases loaded in the seventh inning, scoring just one run on three hits and a walk. The one run would come off the bat of Vallee who singled to left field to bring in Trey Cutchen and pull SIU to within two runs. That would be the closest SIU would get as the Bears went for five runs in the eighth.
Shane Wilhelm (0-1) took the loss for the Salukis in relief after allowing four runs on four hits in 2.1 innings. Cole Koonce pitched 3.1 innings and the Bears would score four runs against the right-hander.
Brandt Thompson pitched four innings and allowed one run on two hits in the start. Dalen Stewart was credited with the win to move to 1-1 after pitching a scoreless 1.2 innings in relief. Stephen Schissler earned his third save after allowing one hit in the final two innings.
Vallee, Bandy and Cutchen led the Salukis with two hits each. Vallee drove in two of the four runs for SIU.
