COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Southern Illinois cross-country teams had a tough outing at the Mizzou Gans Creek Classic. The women finished in 34th place as a team, and the men finished 35th.
The Salukis stuck together with the ladies finishing within two minutes of each other, and the men's top four runners finishing within a minute.
Head Coach Angelina Ramos highlighted optimism in her runners.
"The runners showed a high level of fight in an extremely competitive field," Ramos said. "Every race is an opportunity to adapt and put the men and women on this team in positions to succeed moving forward."
Hannah Meiser and Audrey Boles were Saluki's top performers and set new personal best times in the final 1K of the race. Meiser finished at 22:12.3, an 81-second improvement from her prior personal best. Boles finished at 23:35.5, a 27-second improvement from her prior best.
Weston Jokerst led the men's team, finishing at 25:18.4 in the 8K race.
Ramos showed extreme satisfaction with the underclassman who competed in the Mizzou Gans Creek Classic.
"This was a first 6K race experience for Rae, Riley, Brodie, and Kyla," Ramos said. "The environment can be overwhelming, but I saw a great deal of fight in each of them to show up for the Salukis."
Ramos continued, "Ben Chance and Will Foltz's performance was laudable, both of them were able to walk away gaining confidence in their ability to perform."
