CARBONDALE, Ill. – For a second straight week, a Saluki has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week. After Liseska Gallegos Gutierrez claimed the title last week, Olivia Herron earned the honor Wednesday morning, the conference announced.
"Olivia is picking up where she left off from her junior year, All-American and MVC championship season," says head coach Geoff Hanson. "She put in great work during the summertime and has established herself as one of the best swimmers in the NCAA. This is just the beginning of a huge senior campaign for her."
Herron is coming off a successful weekend in Chicagoland. Versus UIC on Friday, Herron came in first place in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke, and 100-yard butterfly. Then, on Saturday in a tri-meet against Northwestern and Miami (OH), Herron came in first in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard IM. She was also part of a podium finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Currently, Herron sits top-16 nationally in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard IM. This is Herron's seventh time being named MVC Women's Swimmer of the Week in her career.
Herron and Southern are back in action on October 24 and 25 when they travel to Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, for a women's meet versus Illinois and Illinois State.
