LAHAINA, Hawaii — The Southern Illinois Salukis wrapped up play at the Ka'anapali Classic on Tuesday, posting a solid 25-under-par team total and finishing 8th overall in a loaded field.
The Salukis steadied themselves after a rough first round and climbed back into contention with strong play in rounds two and three at the scenic Lahaina course.
They opened with a 9-under showing Monday, followed by a 9-under Tuesday and finished with a 7-under final round. Leading the way once again was Anthony De Schutter, whose 9-under finish (-2, -4, -3) placed him in a tie for 18th individually.
Freshman teammate Ben Keil posted an 8-under finish (-2, -3, -3) to tie for 25th and provided a strong supporting effort. Senior Blake Saffell tied for 34th at 6-under (-2, -3, -1), while sophomore Michael Mikus finished 56th at 2-under (-3, +1, E) and freshman Jaeseung Na logged a 9-over performance to round out the scoreboard.
Head coach Justin Fetcho said he was encouraged by the team's overall consistency despite a few mistakes that proved costly. We played solidly for a lot of the golf tournament. Unfortunately, each day we just had too many careless mistakes that cost us and over the course of three days and playing against very good competition, it caught up to us, Fetcho said.
This course presented a lot of birdie opportunities and we took advantage of a lot of those holes. However, we just had to count too many bogeys and it wiped away a lot of those good things we were doing for a majority of the rounds. We were able to see that our good golf could hold up against some very good teams this week, but they are able to do a better job of managing their over-par holes, which is something that we have to work on throughout this offseason if we want to continue to see improvements.
Fetcho also praised two of his top finishers for their steady play throughout the weekend. Anthony and Ben had some very solid play this week with both of them finishing in the top 25, Fetcho said. Both were able to shoot three consecutive rounds in the 60s, which shows their consistency throughout the event.
The field as a whole went low in Hawaii, but the Salukis' ability to grind through two rounds in the red and keep pace provided hope for the spring leg of the schedule.
