CARBONDALE, Ill. – After a successful three days hosting the A3 Performance Invite, Southern Illinois swim and dive reeled in five weekly awards from the Missouri Valley Conference on Wednesday. Olivia Herron and Carter Ruthven were named Swimmers of the Week, Maddax Thompson and Lívia Munkácsi-Nagy earned the Freshman of the Week titles, and Oliver Mebs was listed as the Men's Diver of the Week.
"After a fantastic home invitational, it's great to have these five recognized for their efforts," says head coach Geoff Hanson. "I look forward to the second half of the season and seeing what they all accomplish."
Herron was in her usual top form during the meet. The senior took home three individual wins in the 100- and 200-breaststroke and the 200-IM while also being a part of the winning 400-medley relay, 200-medley relay, and 800-free relay teams. The England native also set pool records and met NCAA "B" standards in the breaststroke events. Following the conclusion of the Invite, Herron was named the Women's Swimmer of the Meet.
Ruthven, a transfer from Kentucky, also had a stellar performance across the Invite. He took home gold in the 100- and 200-butterfly while also helping lead the 800-freestyle relay, 200-freestyle relay, and 400-medley relay teams to victory. The transfer also put in personal bests in the 50-freestyle and 100-butterfly.
Moving to the freshman group, Thompson was crowned the winner of the 100- and 200-breaststroke events. The Carbondale local also set new personal records in those two events as well as the 200-IM.
As for Munkacsi-Nagy, she won three events: the 500-freestyle, 400-IM, and 1650-freestyle. She was also a member of the winning 800-free relay team and established three personal bests in her three individual events.
Finally, Mebs rounds out the list of Saluki award winners this week. The junior nabbed first place in the 1- and 3-meter dives while also qualifying for NCAA Zone C in the 1-meter event.
Ruthven, Mebs, and Thompson are all first-time winners of weekly awards from the conference. For Herron, this is her third Swimmer of the Week title this season alone and Munkacsi-Nagy is now a two-time winner of the Freshman of the Week title.
Swim and dive is back in action starting on Thursday, Nov. 20, when they begin a three-day run at the Mizzou Invite.
