Salukis aim to slow High Point's high-powered offense
12/01/2025 | 8:00:00 | Men's Basketball
The Panthers (7-1) rank 10th nationally in scoring, averaging 93.8 points per game. While their schedule hasn't been demanding, they've shown they can play clean basketball with a 1.9 assist-to-turnover ratio and shoot 37 percent from 3-point range. They also rank second in the country in fast-break points. Bottom line: High Point will run and gun.

Both teams share a common opponent in UAB, and both lost to the Blazers. SIU fell 81-73 at the Jacksonville Classic, while High Point lost 91-74 in Birmingham. The Panthers also beat Missouri Valley Conference foe UIC, 90-80, on a neutral court in Daytona Beach. Their other wins came against Furman, Averett, Jacksonville, Canisius, Incarnate Word and Western Carolina — which SIU famously defeated in the 1983 Division I-AA national football championship.
Cam'Ron Fletcher, a 6-foot-7 graduate student from St. Louis, leads High Point with 19.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. A Vashon High School product, Fletcher originally signed with Kentucky. Other Panthers averaging double figures include Rob Martin (14.6), Terry Anderson (12.3) and Conrad Martinez (11.5). Martinez, a 6-foot junior from Spain, is 12-for-24 from 3-point range. Chase Johnston, a 6-3 graduate student, has hit 23 of 52 attempts from beyond the arc.
For SIU, 3-point shooting has been an Achilles' heel. The Salukis rank third worst nationally at 24.46 percent from deep. However, they are coming off their best performance of the season, shooting 37.5 percent against Arkansas-Little Rock. That included a 5-for-9 effort from sophomore Drew Steffe, who scored a career-high 21 points.
Quel'Ron House leads SIU with 15.5 points per game. Senior Davion Sykes is the only other Saluki averaging double figures at 10 points. Four others average better than eight points: Rolyns Aligbe, Prince Aligbe, Isaiah Stafford and Steffe.
The Salukis have dominated the boards this season, averaging 3.8 more rebounds than their opponents. High Point, meanwhile, is losing the rebounding battle by nearly one per game.
Last season, High Point beat SIU 94-81 at the Banterra Center.
