CARBONDALE, Ill. - On Friday, the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (4-16 overall, 2-9 conference) got back-on-track with a 72-69 win over Evansville.
"I'm just happy for our kids, I'm happy for our coaching staff that remains resilient, that just keeps grinding, and that does it with a little joy," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "They're not letting the weight of the season get within them. They just come back and they keep fighting."
SIU shot 39% from the field, 33% from three-point range, and 70% at the free throw line, but held Evansville to 37% field-goal shooting and 15% (2-of-13) three-point shooting. The Salukis out-rebounded the Purple Aces, 42-38, and both teams had 17 turnovers.
Gift Uchenna had 20 points, 19 rebounds, two steals, and four blocks in SIU's win over Evansville. Isabella Palmqvist, 14 points, and Alice Curman, 10 points, also scored in double figures on Friday.
In the first quarter, neither team was able to get into a rhythm offensively as both teams scored 12 points on less than 30% field-goal shooting. The Salukis and Aces went a combined 0-for-9 from deep in the opening 10 minutes.
Southern Illinois got going in the second quarter, scoring 21 points on 50% shooting from the field, 2-of-3 three-point shooting, and 7-of-8 (88%) free throw shooting. Palmqvist had a quarter-high nine points, followed by Tyranny Brown's five, to give SIU a 33-24 lead at the halftime break.
Palmqvist had nine points, while Uchenna and Brown had eight points each in the first half to put the Dawgs up nine. While it struggled from the field, shooting 36% in the opening half, SIU was able to get to the free throw 13 times, going 11-of-13 in the half.
The Salukis kept rolling in the third, out-scoring Evansville, 24-17. After the free throw shooting led Southern in the first half, it was the three-point shooting that paved the way for SIU in the third quarter as it went 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Curman, Uchenna, Palmqvist, and Kayla Cooper all supplied three pointers in the quarter.
Southern also held Evansville to a 33% field-goal percentage in the third.
Evansville's best quarter of the night came in the fourth, scoring 28 points as opposed to SIU's 15. The Aces went on a 16-2 run in the quarter to cut the deficit to three, but Southern held on to win by a final score of 72-69.
