DES MOINES, Iowa – The Southern Illinois Track and Field had top finishes in multiple events at the Drake Relays on Saturday. The Salukis competed against strong competition from all over the country and came out of the event with strong momentum into the season's final month.
"The return to Drake Relays for the sprint group was a good one," said the Track and Field Director, Richard Jones. "Making the finals and placing high in the men's and women's 4x1 and 4x2 make the experience well worth it. We still have some things to clean up, but we left the meet with some goals accomplished."
The 4x200 squad (Nadir Langston, Andre Jackson II, Christian Donatelli, Xavier Preston) placed first in the event with a time of 1:25.49 seconds.
The men's 4x100 squad (Caleb Massiah, Andre Jackson II, Christian Donatelli, and Xavier Preston) qualified in round one with a first-place finish (40.28 seconds). Moving into the finals, they finished in second place with a time of 40.41 seconds.
The women's 4x100 squad (Trinity Cleaver, Leah Thames, Teanna Bell, and KeyAnn Wilson) started the event by qualifying in round one with a fifth-place finish (46.03 seconds). They moved on to the finals, finishing in fourth place with a time of 46.12 seconds. The same squad competed in the 4x200 relay race, where they finished in second place with a time of 1:36.43.
Leah Thames competed in the 400m dash, where she finished in second place with a time of 54.62 seconds. Teanna Bell was close behind, finishing in fifth place with a time of 56.12. Both athletes finished in second place in their respective heats.
