McDowell and Wegley to Undergo Shoulder Surgery

Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois University junior guard Molly McDowell and sophomore forward Jennifer Wegley will have to undergo shoulder surgery prior to the 2001-02 campaign, MRI's indicated yesterday.

For McDowell, the surgery on her right shoulder will mark her second operation after having had the same procedure done on her left shoulder back on August 17. McDowell's recent MRI showed impingement and instability to go along with a partial tear in her rotator cuff. In addition, she suffered a small labral tear which was said to be caused from excessive activity such as lifting, shooting, etc. Although McDowell will undergo surgery tomorrow morning, she is expected to be at full strength by the start of the season.

Wegley, who injured her left shoulder while lifting weights a week ago, also suffered instability and a partial rotator cuff tear. Her operation will also take place tomorrow and she is expected to return by the start of the season as well.
